To prepare for every possibility. You don't wait until a pandemic is in full bloom in your country before doing anything. You also want to help stem outbreaks happening internationally which also helps protect us.

Things are not 'status quo' right now. We don't even really know how many people in the US have contracted the virus since we've only tested less than 500 people and the symptoms often times mask the flu.
