Crazy Vegan Mother

Yes and there are never any alternatives to what a doctor says.

Right?

So, this is a chance you would be willing to take with your newborn child? To go against the doctor's advice . . . why?

Doctors aren't always right and it's the parent's choice not yours.

Unfortunately, because some people are too stupid, it is NOT always the parent's choice.
Of course it is.

You cannot tell me with any certainty that the soy formula would not have solved the problem. The woman was arrested for nothing.

It was NOT working. That's why they took the baby.
They took the baby because she chose to try something other than what the doctor advised.

I don't think is like treating diaper rash.

With malnourishment of an infant, there's not enough time to "try other things" for a while.

She was advised to take the baby to the hospital, by her baby's doctor, and she refused. End of story. Once she was in the hospital, she could talk about trying alternatives.

Exactly. This person is obviously clueless and is a good example of WHY we need Child Protective Services.

I apologize for my potty mouth earlier but your comments made me angry. Baby's health comes first, before anything else.

Well, she had parenting classes and I believe was court ordered to take a nutrition class. The baby was returned so, the charges are at this point kind of jacked up now that she has already been through it.

I wonder if that class in on infant nutrition or adult nutrition.

Someone said or implied that being vegan means she couldn't breastfeed. Not at all true. Not even close. And, I'm sure everyone understands that the diagnosis of failure to thrive was not due to her being vegan.

Probably both for infant and adult.

I am only interested in how it went down. Not so much into the argument between vegan and not. I thought that I read that he was kept on a vegan diet and lived with the grandparents until she resumed custody.

Yanno, she is a first time mother. I'm sure that it scared the living crap out of her. The good thing is that the baby is fine and has been returned to the mother. She is very young and also religious. I had several books on babies and toddlers when I had my son and a good 95% of it was crap. I'm sure that it was good information for some but I utilized more from psych textbooks then I ever did with the books that were available. Point being that there are all kinds of so called experts and she may have done the best she could with what information that she had available at the time. It has been corrected.

Hopefully she's gotten her act together. What scared the living crap out of her BTW? The fact that her baby was sick, in part because of her actions? Or because she got into trouble? Personally, finding out that my baby was that sick that he had lost that much weight would have scared the crap out of me, and I wouldn't have probably needed a doctor's advice to take my baby to the hospital.

I'm sure she has. The entire process probably scared the shit out of her. I think that new mothers are a little insecure to begin with. So, when the state stepped in and took the baby then it was more than a little frightening.

I'm not going to continuously humiliate this woman. I'm out.

IF she was "scared" she would have followed the doctor's orders. More than likely, she wasn't "scared" but just a know-it-all.

Did you even read the article? Her baby was malnourished, dehydrated and underweight. IOW, he/she was STARVING.

I only remember it saying the baby had lost 10% of its body weight but nothing about being malnourished.

Well since you don't know a lot about babies, I will tell you that is a LOT for a baby when he/she only weighs several pounds to begin with! They are supposed to be gaining weight and growing rapidly at this age, not losing weight.

Of course, that is bad, but that was not what I meant. Losing 10% over a 12-day period does not necessarily mean the baby's life was in danger. They have to prove that or acquit her.

Parents do a lot of inadvisable things with their children. Should we put them all in jail every time it starts to look dangerous?

Here you go again with assumptions.

The kid lost some weight there was nothing mentioned about it being malnourished.

Monitoring your Newborns Weight Gain American Pregnancy Association

. A 5% weight loss is considered normal for a formula fed newborn. A 7%-10% loss is considered normal for the breastfed baby. Most babies should be back at birth weight by days 10-14 of life. If a baby loses a significant amount of weight, is sick or premature, it may take up to 3 weeks to get back to birth weight.

So it seems a 10% weight loss is normal for a breastfed baby.

Imagine that.

Sorry but as i linked earlier a 10% weight loss in a breast fed newborn is not abnormal.

Seems to me that the doctor and the state overreacted.

The baby was only 12 days old when the doctor discovered a problem. Ok, the mother did not know the baby was losing weight until then, and she should be commended for taking the baby to the doctor in the first place. Yet give her some time to fix the problem. The idea that the baby was going to get violently ill in the next day or so is absurd and sounds like a lot of hysteria to me. That she was working to improve the situation is all that is important, and the baby was not going to die. She wanted special things for her baby so she needed time, but don't slap her in jail for it.

well, supposedly some soy products can block nutrition absorption.maybe thats what was happening. I'm not sure how hard they should be on the mother though. maybe she should be required to take some classes on nutrition as well

At the very least.

I'm thinking that the baby was probably very sick, and they gave her an opportunity to properly care for baby at home, at which she failed, so they felt they had to take the baby to hospitalize him or her and feed the baby intravenously. Poor little baby! Probably a traumatic experience for baby! :( Not to mention, poor little baby probably feels terrible and sick!

At least it's getting the care it needs now :)

I just get a kick out of people who think they know better than a trained professional in the medical field. She says she doesn't believe the baby is sick because it's pooping . . . :rolleyes-41: Good grief, what a dummy!

She did take the baby to a holistic doctor which depending on the advice and adherence to it can be just as good as going to a hospital. If the doctor had told her to take the baby to emergency that would be a whole 'nother story. But he didn't.

She's a dummy. Plain and simple.

It's a simple case of the mother caring more about her beliefs than the health and well being of her child. When the doctor suggested treatments that she did not "believe" in, she took it upon herself to try and treat her baby. She's a know-it-all idiot. Some people are just not cut out to be parents for many reasons.

Your opinion.

People have been having kids for millions of years even during times where the mother's body was depleted and malnourished. Yet we seem to have survived.

For all we know this kid would have been just fine
Not my opinion. Medical fact. 10 percent of a ten pound baby is one pound. That is a very big deal under normal circumstances. This retard managed to take that weight off and dehydrate the kid in just 12 days. Then she withheld any treatment and forced the cops to bust down her door. If they hadn't intervened the kid would be dead. And hilariously you'd be in the variation of this thread complaining why no one did anything.
