Unless they want to retain the status quo.So, yes, this absolutely respects their self determination.
They do not have that option.
So... no.

You seemed unaware of the process for statehood and you still do.
You claimed Puerto Ricans pay federal income taxes. A small portion do under a few circumstances, Simp. The populace has no federal income tax they pay.You should because they were held accountable, which is something to which you are unfamiliar.
If a kid said John Hancock was our first President, they would be correct, but not the first President under the Constitution. He was the first President of the Continental Congress.
You were incorrect when you said Puerto Ricans id not pay income tax because you were referring to all Puerto Ricans, which is simply not true as I showed in my links.
Most puerto ricans Would be fine with the status quo if not for the fact that they have to pay federal taxes while getting no vote in Congress and no vote for the president.I have no problem with Puerto Rico having a referendum on statehood, independence or maintaining the status quo. Note: maintaining the status quo is not an option in the latest PR statehood bill that the House passed. BUT - that referendum should not result in a binding commitment on the US Gov't to make them a state if they decide to become one, the final decision for that should rest with the Congress and the President. If they want to be independent then so be it, they should become their own country and their own gov't. If they decide to keep things the way they are then that's fine too. But if they want to become the 51st state, then Congress needs to decide that, not them.
There's a sizable portion of the population that Don't want statehood or independence they simply want to reform the territory system so That the American citizens who live in US territories are not treated as 2nd class citizens. They want an actual vote in Congress they want an actual vote on the electoral college, And they want the same level of autonomy under the Constitution That States get.
Will Puerto Rico be the next US state? Independence bill goes to US House vote today - as Dem representatives 'look forward to making history'
A bill to vote on Puerto Rico's status within the United States is headed to the house for a vote after being approved by a House committee on Wednesday.
The Puerto Rico Status Act will determine whether the island becomes a state, and independent nation, or a sovereignty associated with the US
Puerto Ricans could move a step closer to a referendum on whether the island should become a U.S. state when the House of Representatives votes Thursday on a bill outlining the process.
A House committee approved the Puerto Rico Status Act on Wednesday, paving the way for the full House vote. The bill was cosponsored by Representative Nydia Velazquez, a Democrat from New York.
The bill was also lead by Rep. Steny Hoyer, a Democrat from Maryland.
If the bill passes the House, it will need 60 votes in the closely divided Senate and Democratic President Joe Biden's signature to become law.
Puerto Rican independence bill goes to US House
No problem, we will just divide a red state up into four states.....Six new GOP Senators.
That's kinda contradictory, they don't want to be a state but they want all the rights and benefits of statehood.
They just want the senate votes.. that's it. They seek to change the rules to make things easier for them. It would be entertaining to hear modern leftists justify why it's necessary without simply admitting they want backdoor Senate votes instead of having to earn them the old-fashioned way.. by appealing to the public.
what about guam? they can actually become two states after it breaks apart in the pacific ocean
Well Puerto Rico would fit right in with the other blue states as its government is as corrupt as they come. Will Puerto Rico be the next US state? Independence bill goes to US House vote today - as Dem representatives 'look forward to making history'

Not on the national scale of leadership we won't. It will be all Democrat. Between this and amnesty (if they can pull it off) the Republic (democracy) will be over.
Just more partisan nonsense from Democrats. Will Puerto Rico be the next US state? Independence bill goes to US House vote today - as Dem representatives 'look forward to making history'

It's already over. It's been over for a long time. Did you miss the memo that Eisenhower sent out?
FFS, Pelosi & Ryan both stopped allowing new amendments to be introduced on the house floor. Now they have to have committee approval first. That was the final nail in the Republic coffin. And as far as "democracy" goes, the way the primaries are ran, where the party colluding with the media to pick who runs, who's funded, who get's the most attention on national TV (and many local channels) was the final nail in "democracy."
You're worried about the democrats having the majority for ever. That's just not even possible. It's a uniparty made out to be a two party system.
We will still have republican majorities.
Or just cut them loose and let them be their own country and stop being a drain in the US.Its a bad idea.
We don't need another state.
It does underscore two things; the absolute brain deadness that the US seems to have when it comes to inequity and the inability of the nation to deal with the inequities like adults would based on politics and politics alone.
Look....we have US Citizens without Senatorial representation. It shouldn't happen. Puerto Rico, the USVI etc... need to be folded into an existing state on the east coast. Florida, Maryland, South Carolina...which ever. Guam, Wake, etc... should be folded into Hawaii or California or whatever. No US Citizen should be without representation in Congress.
Also get rid of the 3 electoral votes for the District of Colombia. Having a number evenly divisible by 2 is a recipe for disaster. Knock it down to 435 and remove the possibility of an electoral college tie of 269.
Hell, we should do that with the entire South.Or just cut them loose and let them be their own country and stop being a drain in the US.
