When a megalomaniacal German dictator methodically kills 6 million Jews, and some Muslim leaders question whether the Holocaust occurred, that’s an insult. The harm Adolf Hitler committed was real, tangible, verifiable and undeniable. The denigration of that memory serves only to perpetuate the harm and encourage religious intolerance.

When jihadists rampage through Christian and Yazidi villages in Iraq, raping women and killing children because they are not Muslim, that constitutes a direct attack on religion. To rape, torture and kill on the basis of religious nonconformity goes beyond the realm of insult. It is a crime worthy of a military response and even deadly force to stop the perpetrators.

Then there are those deemed not Muslim enough. In Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia and Kenya, the recent record is rife with examples of Muslims killing fellow Muslims because one side opposes the other’s sect. These are true insults to Islam — as was the death of Ahmed Merabet, a Muslim police officer among the 12 killed in Paris.
