ESPN Panelist Calls National Anthem A "War Anthem"

"...why we play anthems for sports events in the first place (some sports but not others)... thoughts?"
Beyond a blanket answer of 'tradition' in some of these settings... I dunno... never gave it a single nanosecond's worth of thought...

Which pretty much describes my level of interest, as well, I guess...

And, if that's true, it's time for me to clear-out of this particular thread...

Ah, you're not a baseball fan. There's your problem right there.

I gonna report you to HUAC.

The song sucks, and it is damned near impossible to sing on key. It also focuses on pride of successful warfare. AtB would be much better. As for the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, the USA is transferring citizen's loyalty to a piece of cloth, which may, or may not, be in the hands of constitutionally abiding politicians. Hitler pulled the same trick by having every soldier pledge allegiance to him, personally, NOT to Germany. The pledge was also mostly used originally as a sales tool to make sure that every classroom in American had one.

All true. And it was written not only by an entrepreneur, but a socialist one.

Perhaps what it says about us has to do, originally at least, with materialism rather than straight fetishism. Worth a ponderation. :eusa_think:

Of course it's a war anthem. "And the Rockets Red Glare". If that doesn't sound militaristic. I don't know what is/

It was an odd choice for our National Anthem and didn't become our National Anthem until 1931, over 116 years after it was written. It was an ode to a military victory and reflected Key's delight in seeing the flag still flying through the night

America the Beautiful and My Country tis of thee (set to God save the Queen) would have been better choices. They are better songs and reflect the values of our country better

But, we have The Star Spangled Banner. It is our anthem and we love it. It still chokes me up when I hear it

The PROFESSOR is a hate-filled leftist, socialist who received all the benefits of living in the great nation, probably making a lot of money from taxpayers, who typically bashes the nation that gives him all these great things and everything that symbolizes it.

To feel anger at people like this is a waste of time as nothing that can be said will ever change his mind.

There are far more important things to become enraged over than this. :eusa_whistle:

Why would you change his mind when he is right?
