Sep 10, 2015: The Nobel committee gave the European Union the peace prize in 2012 for its unified struggle in bringing about peace, reconciliation and upholding human rights.

On Wednesday, European Commission's new president Jean-Claude Juncker confirmed that the unity that European nations showed since the decimation of World War II is now beyond stretching point. While delivering his first "State of the Union" speech to the European parliament, Juncker admitted that the recent impasse over the migrant issue had exposed the cracks in the joints of the 28-nation bloc. Speaking "frankly" at a "time for honesty", Juncker admitted "the European Union is not in a good state as there is not enough Europe in this Union and there is not enough Union in this Union".

Reminding Europeans that "Europe is a continent where nearly everyone has at one time been a refugee" - their common history marked by millions of Europeans fleeing from religious or political persecution, from war, dictatorship or oppression, Juncker announced plans under which 120,000 additional asylum seekers will be distributed among EU nations, with binding quotas. The decision however will be taken at the Extraordinary Council of Interior Ministers on September 14. Admitting that Europe has failed the Syrian people, he proposed a common EU list of safe countries of origin which will enable member states to fast track asylum procedures for nationals of countries that are presumed safe to live in.

He however added that the list is just for procedural simplification. He said "It cannot take away the fundamental right of asylum for asylum seekers from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia, and Turkey. But it allows national authorities to focus on those refugees which are much more likely to be granted asylum, notably those from Syria. And this focus is very much needed in the current situation". "Europe has made make the mistake in the past of distinguishing between Jews, Christians, Muslims. There is no religion, no belief, no philosophy when it comes to refugees," he added.

He also reminded EU countries that Europe was an ageing continent and migrants will help revive the continent. He then promised that the Commission will come forward with a well-designed legal migration package in early 2016. "If there are more, safe and controlled roads opened to Europe, we can manage migration better and make the illegal work of human traffickers less attractive. Let us not forget, we are an ageing continent in demographic decline. We will be needing talent. Over time, migration must change from a problem to be tackled to a well-managed resource," Juncker added.

According to Juncker, the first priority of the EU is the refugee crisis. He said "Since the beginning of the year, nearly 500,000 people have made their way to Europe. The vast majority of them are fleeing from war in Syria, the terror of the Islamic State in Libya or dictatorship in Eritrea. The most affected member states are Greece, with over 213,000 refugees, Hungary, with over 145,000, and Italy, with over 115,000. Now is not the time to take fright. It is time for bold, determined and concerted action by the EU. This is first of all a matter of humanity and of human dignity. And for Europe it is also a matter of historical fairness".

According to Juncker, Europe represents a beacon of hope and a haven of stability in the eyes of women and men in the Middle East and in Africa. "That is something to be proud of and not something to fear. Europe today, in spite of many differences amongst its member states is by far the wealthiest and most stable continent in the world. We have the means to help those fleeing from war, terror and oppression. It is true that Europe cannot house all the misery of the world". Countering fears that the migration would marginalise Europeans, Juncker said "There is an unprecedented number of refugees coming to Europe at the moment. However, they still represent just 0.11% of the total EU population. As long as there is war in Syria and terror in Libya, the refugee crisis will not simply go away".

The Highest GDP in Europe for a single country is just over 3 trillion US dollars...

Japan has over 4 trillion and the USA has more than the entire EU

We produce agricultural products and by products, medical devices, software, alcohol, pharmaceuticals....

Germany are pretty good at making cars, France Planes, Denmark wind turbines, Italians clothes....

My car is german, my computer is made in cork, nearly all our food is local, furniture is mainly local... We buy from china too are you saying US doesn't..

Japan's population is 127 million, Germany is 82 million... The average german makes more than your average japanese by $7000 a year...

Where are you going with this. You seem to want to bitch about Europe, for what reason... European like having a safety net, a strong middle class, higher government services, educated workforce, not to go bankrupt if your get sick... What your problem with that...

France and the UK and Italy are also excellent car makers, France is just as good if not better than Italy in fashion, depending on your personal tastes.
France sucks at cooking, but nearby Switzerland and Belgium with French influence are much better.

Don't forget that most of the worlds top Chefs are British, and the French took British cuisine and made it their own by adding garlic and snails
