Father Arrested For Protesting A Book

To me, there shouldn't be a time limit over how long a person gets to say their peace. Some people may have more to say than others and if they do, they should be given the opportunity to get it all out. Once they are done, the powers that be can move onto the next person.

God bless you always!!! :) :) :)

I find it hilarious that parents let themselves get bent outta shape over a paragraph in a book they're afraid their children might read UT let those same kids go to the movies and watch people get killed violently or play graphically violent video games.

It's not a book that a parent thought their child "might read" it was a book that the school told a child that she MUST read. It was assigned to her. The father was angry that no notice was given. He has the right to protect his child from filth and pornography. Just because the liberal mind is totally depraved doesn't mean that everyone should swirl down the same toilet.

I 5 ought the story said the parents were asked in a letter and none complained? Did he just not read the letter?

From FOX:

"Superintendent Kent Hemingway told me in a telephone interview that the district had been using the novel since 2007 – and to his knowledge – there have not been any complaints.

He also said the principal contacted every family in the affected classes and polled them on whether or not they supported the racy novel.

“More than 80 percent consented with their students continuing with the book,” he said. “Ten percent said no.”

He said 10 percent were still undecided on whether or not they wanted their youngsters to read about lovers grinding their loins."

Going back to 1975---

Judy Blume Showed Innocence Isn't 'Forever' : NPR

<In fifth grade, I was a member of an all-girls book club. We met by the tether-ball court during recess and read novels aloud.

Okay, just the dirty parts.

By seventh grade, the book club had disbanded. That was the year I discovered Forever.... I wasn't immediately drawn to the book. The author was Judy Blume.

It was 1993. I didn't know then that Forever... had caused an uproar when it was released in 1975, or that some people called it smut, or that it would go on to be one of the most banned books in America. Had I realized this, I would have read it much sooner.

Once I turned the first page, I was hooked. It was the narrator, Katherine's description of a boy at a party that did it:
>

Judy Blume is a very good children's author.

I can remember having Wifey confiscated during lunch until the end of the school day in 7th grade. I thought the teacher was gonna blow a gasket. I also dont thimk she thought id have the nerve to claim it after school, but I did!

Philosophical discussions about literature have been going on for a while.

Again--since there aren't more incidents like this--those involved--schools--must have some procedures in place.

Perhaps going forward this parent will be more involved in what his child reads. The town of Gilford, NH--around 10,000 population--fwiw. One would think that if the book has been approved by the school district since 2007--others would have addressed this issue before now. They still can--doesn't seem likely.

I am not 'happy' about it--but explicit sex seems to here to stay--as well as a veritable Pandora's box of other societal ills. Confront them--I suppose that is the purpose of such books?

They were delinquent in sending the letter out this time. They sent it out on May 5--acknowledged the error.

As other individuals have said, the man had his allotted two minutes and he wasn't allowed more because others had the right to chime in a subjects and thus he had no right to encroach upon their time. As for the book, pornography is in the eye of the beholder and apparently, other parents saw nothing wrong with the book. And, as for his being arrested, he was disruptive and said they could arrest him. The police obliged him.

Let's put this into context shall we so all the Bible-thumping accusations are neutralized. The topic of the book is about a school shooting.. Here's one of excepts the parents are objecting to..

“‘Relax,’ Matt murmured, and then he sank his teeth into her shoulder. He pinned her hands over her head and ground his hips against hers. She could feel his erection, hot against her stomach.

” … She couldn’t remember ever feeling so heavy, as if her heart were beating between her legs. She clawed at Matt’s back to bring him closer.

“‘Yeah,’ he groaned, and her pushed her thighs apart. And then suddenly Matt was inside her, pumping so hard that she scooted backward on the carpet, burning the backs of her legs. … (H)e clamped his hand over her mouth and drove harder and harder until Josie felt him come.

“Semen, sticky and hot, pooled on the carpet beneath her.”

Shameful --- complete and utter disrespect for "EDUCATION".... These folks on that school board ought to be locked up for distributing PORN TO MINORS.....

That's it? Yes. In the entire book that's it.

Did you ever read Catcher In the Rye in school?

That's about all I NEED to read to know that those school board members should have been arrested for distributing pornography to minors. I'll wait for the NC17 movie version and skip it.

Read Catcher in the Rye.. In fact, I've seen BOTH SIDES of this censorship idiocy. Here in Tenn -- I defended the parents who DID NOT want Catcher in the Rye removed from the Middle School library. Because it has withstood the test as great literature. I doubt that there are ANY passages in it that get the same PentHouse thumbs up as the trash we are discussing..

The book debuted at # 1 on the NYT Bestseller list and got excellent reviews and applause for its depiction of the real world young kids face today. To ban it or criticize it over one passage is prudent and silly.

Catcher in the Rye is the WORST book ever.

Sorry if I'm interrupting an argument...

But that book is about as BORING as it gets in the history of literature.

They can claim that he was arrested for the "two minute rule" but we all know that he was arrested for daring to speak against the teacher's union and their sub-par curriculum and their "dumbing-down" agenda.

hurr that dad deserved it, was probably a stupid redneck who grows my food for a living ugh

Both you and the Miami Herald are liars, the suspect was arrested for disorderly conduct, not ‘protesting’ a book.

The issue has nothing to do with ‘freedom of speech,’ nor is it ‘under attack.’

Speaking past 2 minutes is hardly an arrestable offense. Had he been a mouth-frothing liberal he'd still be talking and getting away with it.

How is that an "attack" on his "freedom of speech"?

Hint: the answer is in my siggy. :)

You fucking boot licker. You make me sick. You won't be laughing the day some pig cracks your skull on the sidewalk.

So fucking what. Its one freaking paragraph. If that Bible thumper doesn't like it, he can educate his brat at home.

He should educate his daughter at home or find a private school. She is only going to learn how to be an uneducated pervert in public school.

Watch out ... freedom of speech is under attack...

Both you and the Miami Herald are liars, the suspect was arrested for disorderly conduct, not ‘protesting’ a book.

Except he wasn't disorderly.

He objected to state-directed sexualization of his child.

And for that he was arrested.

The girl wasn't being sexualised, for fucks sake. Its a god damned book. What about the numerous sex scenes in the Bible?

So how are we different from Russia again? A group of masked feminists invaded a church during services and vandalized it. The protesters were arrested.

A man addresses a school board meeting without screaming or destroying. Merely to question pornography assigned to 14 year old as a reading assignment and gets arrested.

How do we have more freedom?

well, let's see. The disruptive and probably crazy father was dragged out of a meeting, booked and allowed to go home, and probably faces at worst, a misdemeanor charge for disorderly conduct.

The Pussy Riot girls went to prison for months.

That's kind of the difference.
