Father Arrested For Protesting A Book

Let's put this into context shall we so all the Bible-thumping accusations are neutralized. The topic of the book is about a school shooting.. Here's one of excepts the parents are objecting to..

“‘Relax,’ Matt murmured, and then he sank his teeth into her shoulder. He pinned her hands over her head and ground his hips against hers. She could feel his erection, hot against her stomach.

” … She couldn’t remember ever feeling so heavy, as if her heart were beating between her legs. She clawed at Matt’s back to bring him closer.

“‘Yeah,’ he groaned, and her pushed her thighs apart. And then suddenly Matt was inside her, pumping so hard that she scooted backward on the carpet, burning the backs of her legs. … (H)e clamped his hand over her mouth and drove harder and harder until Josie felt him come.

“Semen, sticky and hot, pooled on the carpet beneath her.”

Shameful --- complete and utter disrespect for "EDUCATION".... These folks on that school board ought to be locked up for distributing PORN TO MINORS.....

Both you and the Miami Herald are liars, the suspect was arrested for disorderly conduct, not ‘protesting’ a book.

The issue has nothing to do with ‘freedom of speech,’ nor is it ‘under attack.’

Speaking past 2 minutes is hardly an arrestable offense. Had he been a mouth-frothing liberal he'd still be talking and getting away with it.

ten to one he was a biblethumping nutter

A New Hampshire Attorney? Doubt it ... likely just a concerned secularist. A Bible-thumper like me would simply remove my daughter from public school and place her in a school where academics took precedence over pornography.

You have be mentally commitable to attempt to defend this crap.. I'm sure the "professionals" will tell you --- "It's the only way we can get your sons and daughters to put down the remote and read a book".. Can't wait for our leftist buds to TRY and claim it's only "Bible Thumping" parents who would object to fine literature like that. FTRecord -- I've read better in Penthouse Letters..

I am not familiar with these books--but assume they are somewhat similar.

Not books I would ever want to read--but that seems to be 'where we are'.

I suppose every school district has its own procedures --generally a parent can request an alternative assignment.

~~~~~~~~
This list seems to be more varied--some classic books and some newer books. Jodi Picoult--the author of the disputed book--wrote "My Sister's Keeper'--has been challenged many times---assorted disturbing themes, etc. fwiw.
http://www.csmonitor.com/Books/chap...2010-Which-books-drew-the-most-fire-last-year
<Challengers deemed Jodi Picoult’s “My Sister’s Keeper” ban-able for a plethora of reasons: sexism, homosexuality, sexual explicitness, offensive language, religious viewpoint, drugs, suicide, violence, and of course, for being unsuited for its age group.
The only reason we're "where we are" is because good men did nothing while evil men moved the goal posts. We don't have to remain where we are as a nation but at least decent individuals can start moving in another direction.
Here's a short list of some really good books for young adults:
Tom Sawyer
Huckleberry Finn
Moby Dick
The Old Man and the Sea
Of Mice and Men
The Call of the Wild
Etc.
There are lots more. Perhaps one that they should read is 1984. It might give them some insight as to the direction this nation is headed.
You are preaching to the choir--fwiw.
It was not pleasant--teaching middle school English. This is the what is going on.
Any student with access to the Lifetime movie channel should be familiar with the topics that are now dominating literature. Grim and depressing.
I don't think I would survive as a teenager today.
~~~~~
Since I know that is the 'philosophy' and since there aren't more incidents like this--I can only assume that parents have some options--and exercise them. Challenging approved reading lists is a complicated process--as this man will find out if he is concerned enough to pursue this further. I have to wonder why he wasn't more concerned earlier in the year--certain some sort of lists were provided. I agree with him --more than disagree with him --if that matters. The students I taught were well informed on explicit sexual language --I don't see much that can be done to change that. Most are probably unfortunately well informed on grim realities---school shootings and all manner of things that should not be. ????

Going back to 1975---

Judy Blume Showed Innocence Isn't 'Forever' : NPR

<In fifth grade, I was a member of an all-girls book club. We met by the tether-ball court during recess and read novels aloud.

Okay, just the dirty parts.

By seventh grade, the book club had disbanded. That was the year I discovered Forever.... I wasn't immediately drawn to the book. The author was Judy Blume.

It was 1993. I didn't know then that Forever... had caused an uproar when it was released in 1975, or that some people called it smut, or that it would go on to be one of the most banned books in America. Had I realized this, I would have read it much sooner.

Once I turned the first page, I was hooked. It was the narrator, Katherine's description of a boy at a party that did it:
>

Judy Blume is a very good children's author.

My daughter was given the option to read this book at the beginning of the school year. She is a sophomore in high school.
She gave me an informational paper of the 3 selections she had to choose from.
Oddly, she needed signed permission to read The Grapes of Wrath but not 19 Minutes.
I was initially taken aback by the subject matter, a school shooting, since there was one in a nearby city of Chardon in February of 2012. It wasca little close to home.
The topic of bullying was also a major focus of area schools last fall and seemed apropos.

I will not forbid my child from reading any book she wishes. She is mature and I trust her judgement.
The passage that was sited as a quote earlier was integral to Josies state of mind as the story unfolds. Did it have to be so descriptive. Perhaps not. But neither is it 50 Shades of Grey, which my daughter has admitted to perusing in the bookstore with one of her friends.
It's normal to be curious about things parents and society treat as taboo. The difference is the parents being parents and teaching theirckids the difference between right and wrong.
In other words, while I may not approve of the literary license the author used in the scene, it is a moment for the parent to discuss how NOT to treat someone you profess to love.

I suppose someone crossing their eyes and making a face would be considered "disorderly" in today's liberal forums (if it's a concerned parent doing it).

Not sure, and I'm really not interested in what liberals call it in their forums. I'm interested in what the local statutes say, which is far more relevant don't you think?

Huck Finn has been banned from many a library, which is a shame.

I guess only the controversial books you personally approve of should be allowed without debate eh?

I can remember having Wifey confiscated during lunch until the end of the school day in 7th grade. I thought the teacher was gonna blow a gasket. I also dont thimk she thought id have the nerve to claim it after school, but I did!

He had the opportunity to make his point.

He had the same time as anybody else.

He asked to be arrested, he was.

What's the problem?

You don't arrest someone for speaking their mind. It's as simple as that, Jake. Obviously you would sit there and tout the law over the rights they are designed to protect. Am I to assume you support Common Core as well?

No one arrested him for speaking his mind. He was given his time, the same as everybody else.

It's as simple as that, TK.

Don't deflect with Common Core because you know you are wrong on this.

Parents should not be put into position where the school board is pushing porn and viiolence as the prefferred assignments. It singles out their kids for jeering by their lucky peers who get to read that shit. Either because their parents dont care, or they put too much trust in the authorities....

One of the reasons I fled California, was the inclusion of a book on gang violence on my daughters reading list. Complete with multiple graphic gang rapes. Not just bad judgement, lots of us wanted to prosecute for distributing porn to minors...At 14, thats not what successful students need...

Are you truly this ignorant and dense or are you just another willfully ignorant partisan hack.

That's it? Yes. In the entire book that's it.

Did you ever read Catcher In the Rye in school?

I find it hilarious that parents let themselves get bent outta shape over a paragraph in a book they're afraid their children might read UT let those same kids go to the movies and watch people get killed violently or play graphically violent video games.

It's not a book that a parent thought their child "might read" it was a book that the school told a child that she MUST read. It was assigned to her. The father was angry that no notice was given. He has the right to protect his child from filth and pornography. Just because the liberal mind is totally depraved doesn't mean that everyone should swirl down the same toilet.
