Food Stamp Recipients Top 46 Million for 36th Straight Month

There's an easy solution for this: raise the minimum wage.

You are such an economic illiterate. We have a flooded labor market. Raising the minimum wage only benefits those who can keep a job, it does nothing for those who lose a job because, NOW PAY ATTENTION, the value that they produce is less than the wage they must be paid.

Better to raise wages by increasing labor scarcity and the best way to do that is to skim off about 20 million low wage workers and send them on an all-expense paid trip to Mexico.
The CBO estimates 500,000 jobs would be lost if raised to 10.10. That's the state that matters. Over time, the increase in economic demand from higher wages will inevitably create jobs.

The number of beneficiaries on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program--food stamps--has now topped 46,000,000 for 36 straight months, according to new data released by the Department of Agriculture (USDA). From September 2011 through August 2014, the latest month for which data is available, the number of persons participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has exceeded 46 million. In August 2014, according to USDA, there were 46,484,828 beneficiaries of the SNAP program. That was down slightly—2,060 beneficiaries—from the 46,486,888 who got food stamps in July......
There's an easy solution for this: raise the minimum wage.

The average household on food stamps has a total income of $766 a month. The average recipient receives $133 a month in benefits. 83% of all food stamps funding goes to households with at least one dependent in the household.

raising the minimum wage to fight poverty is comical..so let's give everyone 50..no..75$ per hour..great plan.....except the cost of everything else will rise accordingly and immediately erase any "gains":...basic economics.
You people are so dumb. No one is suggesting 50 or 75 per hour. 15 is what is needed. That would be kept up with inflation. As long as it is raised gradually, perhaps over 3 years, the initial economic harm would be small. Over time the increase in consumer spending would improve the economy.

if you raise wages, prices will also rise.
This stuff isn't hard.

are you suggesting that increasing the minimum wage isn't inflationary?

Here's how the real world works, little marxist....a company, if forced to pay people more, will raise prices to cover their loss.
So you get a dollar more salary...everything else goes up $1.05

People who have house notes and cars and jobs understand these basic economic facts...
Do you live with your parents still?

Yeah and right now people can't support themselves on less than 10 an hour because of inflation.

Again raising the wage over time gradually will do little to increase prices. You are dumb if you think the increase in prices will offset the increase in wages. It doesn't work like that. The actual price increase would be slight and level off over time.

The number of people on food stamps has actually fallen over the last two years by almost 2 million people after cresting to upwards of 48 million people due to the recession.

There are a lot of myths about food stamps. One of the popular ones is that only lazy layabouts are on food stamps. In fact, the majority of people on food stamps are working.

In reality, the problem is stagnant wages on the low end. The best immediate solution is to raise the minimum wage.

And there are myths about the minimum wage as well. The most popular ones are 1) It will kill jobs!, 2) it will force businesses into bankruptcy!, and 3) it will cause inflation!

In reality, there is no empirical evidence in the over 80 years of studying the minimum wage that show it will kill jobs, cause businesses to go belly up, or to cause inflation. What 80 years and over 200 studies all agree on is that the primary result of raising the minimum wage is that millions of workers will have more money to spend in the economy itself.

What's happening at the moment is that we're subsidizing the employees of multi-billion dollar corporations who work full-time hours. Do the math. 37.5/hrs per week times about $7.25/hr comes to just over $270/week or just over $14,000/year.

Most affected workers do not work for small businesses, another common myth. They are disproportionately single women with children who work for companies like McDonald's, Walmart, etc. Those companies actually encourage their employees to seek supplemental assistance from the government. I find that galling.

In the 12 months ending July 31, 2014, Walmart grossed $128 billion, but you mean to tell me MY taxpayer dollars have to go to support THEIR employees?

Our collective reaction to this should be WTF???!!!

If we do nothing, the CBO projects that by 2025, food stamps will have declined back to where they were in the mid-90's. Not bad. The sky isn't actually falling. But we can do better. We can start shaving billions off of our yearly deficits (which continue to shrink) if we raise the minimum wage by about $5 over the next 5 years.

If we do that, we'll cut food stamp and SNAP usage at least in half by the end of this decade and no one in the equation will suffer. Huge companies will continue to make their billions, tens of millions will be able to govern their own lives without taxpayer help, our government will get out of deficit sooner, and our tax burden will be lowered. It's a win-win all around. Raise the minimum wage already.

You do realize we've gone through several wage increases and the economy in all areas did not not flounder.

You are such an idiot. You can't tell shit. I'm 28. I have a full time job with my own place.

That's absurd. How could 46 million Americans be on food stamps with 5.5% unemployment and the polity dancing in the streets, just mad with joy over their collective financial prosperity?
Democrats don't want to lose it's voter base.

OK... raise minimum wage... and then places like McDonalds will replace the moron with no continued education with a computer. I mean how smart do you have to be to say, "do you want fries with that?" Are those jobs really intended for people to make a career out of and LIVE OFF? No, these are entry level jobs for people that are either fresh out of high, high school drop outs or just plain STUPID. So if you raise the minimum wage, all of a sudden that big mac that has been $4.50 is now going to be $7.00, and all those people that thought they were going to get paid more than they were worth just lost their jobs because they were replaced with a computer and automation. This same scenario will play out all through America, all through entry level jobs, all you progtards will do is essentially ensure that no one will have an entry level job, they'll all be gone, replaced by computers and automation. So to get a higher paying job, you're going to have to go to college. In the meantime, businesses will close and prices will go up, which will stagnate the economy.

Yeah you progtards are economic geniuses alright... you're solution to everything is always, GIVE MORE FOR LESS, and that's why the country is $18 TRILLION dollars in DEBT now and growing. Soon we won't be able to pay for the INTEREST on that debt and world economies will crumble, and all you can think of doing is speeding it up.

Does George Soros pay you people to post your SHIT here? He must, because he's the one that wants to see America brought to it's knees, he and OBAMA.

I never said the economy would flounder. I said it was inflationary because the cost of goods and services will rise also and it will erase any "gain".
