You know, there are several things here...........

First off, the police weren't called in for an emergency or criminal call, they were called on a non emergency number for a routine welfare check.

Second, if you saw the video footage on television from the cop's body cam, you would have seen that he fired his weapon before he finished telling her to show him her hands. Matter of fact, he fired his weapon just before he said the final word.

The woman was in her own house, and the doors were open, which is why a neighbor called in a welfare check. Since the lights were on in the house, and the door was open, why in the hell didn't they go in through the front door where they could actually see what was going on? And, considering the fact that there was an 8 year old boy in the house that the woman was watching, it's lucky he didn't get shot as well.

Personally? I think the cop was wrong to fire as soon as they did, and there might need to be a trial to see if he is guilty of manslaughter or murder.

The lights were on. There was no indication the residence had been ransacked or anything had been taken. It was a non-emergency welfare check

What the cop should have done is what he was called there to do: check on the woman. Knock on the door and simply say "Hello? Ft. Worth PD'.

Instead, this cop SNUCK into the back yard, whispering as he went, and shot to death the very woman he was sent to check on in her own home, through a window in her OWN backyard. And without ever announcing he was a cop.

Worse still, the cop gave her an order to show her hands, shooting her to death AS HE GAVE THE ORDER. There's simply no way this woman could have possibly obeyed the officer even if she knew he was one.

As even as he killed her in her own home, he never once announced he was an officer.

At every stage, the officer violated police policy, ignored his training and pointlessly escalated the situation before shooting this woman to death in her own home.

Not really. Firstly, to hear the sherif tell it; they were responding to an open structure call. Not a welfare check. The neighbor wanted a welfare check; however the dispatcher, dispatched an open structure call. So that is what the officers frame of mind was. That’s an important detail.
Secondly given that we know people tend to live in their own homes, and that people are constitutionally allowed to be armed; there is no reasonable presumption that when a person is seen in a home, with a gun, that they are a danger, or a criminal. Most gun owners live in there homes, and keep their guns there as well. Additionally it isn’t uncommon for an armed home owner to have a weapon on them while investigating suspicious activity on their own property. And make no mistake about it; this officers conduct and behavior throughout the incident was highly suspicious.

Let’s use you. You are in your home. While watching TV, or playing some games, or just enjoying your evening you see a light flash around your back yard. What do you do? Now, instead of being a big bad man, imagine you are a single female. Who is in your backyard? Is your first answer that it must be police searching for a baddie? Or police here to check on me? Or is your first instinctive response that someone bad is in your back yard, and you might be the victim of a robbery, rape, or even murder. You have a child in your home. What do you do?

I know what I do, and I am a male. I get my gun. I bet one hundred percent of you who are backing the cop on these threads does the same thing. You get your gun to protect yourself, and your family. That is literally the exact reason I and you argue for private ownership of firearms. Let’s not forget that this is Texas with a high percentage of gun ownership.

You get your gun, and you try and figure out who is in your backyard. You don’t want to shoot at shadows, because you know your bullet could hit neighbors. Perhaps you get your phone to call the police, perhaps not. You might be mistaken, there might not be anyone back there. But there is. A man is back there dressed in all black. He shines a light at you, and shouts to show him your hands. Who is he? It takes seconds for you to process the situation, it takes seconds for the cops to process the situation if someone pulls a gun on them and starts shouting commands.

True story. We had a cordless phone and left it off the charger for a long time. My wife was home, and suddenly there is a banging on the door. It is the police. Early evening, but dark out. My wife answers the door and the police want to know who dialed 911? No one my Wife assures them. They were called the police insist. Is anyone there, anyone behind the door perhaps?

It took a few minutes to figure out that the cordless phone battery had run down, and there was a safety feature that called 911 in this event. We trashed the phone the next day. But the police came to the door to figure out what was going on, aggressive, yes. But they contacted the residents first, before sneaking around the property to see what was going on.

Now, that was an actual emergency number call. It was unintentional, and accidental, and still the police came to the door to find out what was going on. Common practice. First, figure out what is going on. The cop in Texas didn’t do that. The door was open. Why not knock?

The cop was wrong. No matter how you look at it. He had no business in the back yard. Perhaps if there had been no answer at the door. Perhaps if he had shouted Police Department is anyone home several times. Perhaps if he had gotten no answer then it would have been OK to go in, or around the house. But sneaking around the house is just flat assed stupid.

If you think I am wrong. Then tell me what you would do if you saw a light flashing around your back yard. And if you answer with anything other than get my gun to find out what the hell is going on at my house, I will call you a liar right here and now.

Come on guys. If the cop was right, then the homeowner was wrong. If the homeowner is wrong, than every single one of us who take the reasonable precaution of arming ourselves when odd things are going on in OUR YARD, is wrong too aren’t we? So doesn’t that mean you are wrong?

Secondly given that we know people tend to live in their own homes, and that people are constitutionally allowed to be armed; there is no reasonable presumption that when a person is seen in a home, that they are a danger, or a criminal. Most gun owners live in there homes, and keep their guns there as well. Additionally it isn’t uncommon for an armed home owner to have a weapon on them while investigating suspicious activity on their own property. And make no mistake about it; this officers conduct and behavior throughout the incident was highly suspicious.

Any resident of any home should be concerned about this officer's conduct....and the legal consequences for them.

As if a cop can unannounced, sneak into your backyard and kill you in your own home through your own window, never identifying themselves as an officer and giving you no reasonable chance for you to comply with their order......and then get away with it?

Then cops can kill anyone in their own home with no accountability.

And that's absolutely unacceptable. Cops are our protectors. And this man did anything BUT protect the resident of that home.

Not only did the cop fail to knock on the front door on a non-emergency welfare check with NO crime whatsoever reported, he snuck into the backyard - whispering to his partner as they entered her property. And then shot the woman through her own window from her own backyard WHILE he's giving her the order to show him her hands.

He's literally screaming over his own order as he fires. There's simply no way she could have responded quickly enough for the officer NOT to shoot her to death.

Nor did he ever announce that he was a police officer.

It also makes one wonder how a reversal of roles will play out in the media, and courts..?
Take the same situation; but instead... The woman sees the unannounced stranger draw down on her with his weapon, and she puts one through the middle of his forehead. The same fucks screaming on behalf of the cop in the real life scenario; would be calling for her head in the other.
