Fox News says Tucker Carlson breached his contract

“Fox defends its very existence on freedom of speech grounds,” said attorney Bryan Freedman in response to reports, first by Axios, about a letter to Carlson from a lawyer for Fox.

“Now they want to take Tucker Carlson’s right to speak freely away from him because he took to social media to share his thoughts on current events.”

Carlson was fired in April in the aftermath of a $787.5m settlement between Fox and Dominion Voting Systems, which sued for defamation over the broadcast of Donald Trump’s lies about fraud in the 2020 election.

Before the settlement, Fox News mounted its defense on first amendment lines.

The terms of Carlson’s departure are not known. Reports have said the firing was part of the Dominion settlement. Fox News has called such reports “categorically false”. Dominion has said it received the money two days before the case was closed and six days before Carlson was fired.

Carlson trailed his new show on Twitter before debuting on Tuesday with a 10-minute monologue to camera, operating his own teleprompter from what appeared to be a barn at his property in Maine.. . "

Bryan Freedman, the lawyer hired by Tucker Carlson and Don Lemon, is a Hollywood heavyweight who could secure them mega-million payouts

True. We won't know if that is in there, unless, and until further developments.

Agreed. Without access to the contract, its hard to say.

There are clauses and contract scenarios that would put Fox in a strong seat, if they exist. Perhaps later we'll find out.

They can't prevent Carlson from practicing his profession; all they can do is find a non-compete clause with his production company or something. They can't prevent other companies from hiring him as a regular employee. Been there, done that; all he has to do is move to a right to work state. Screw Fox and the Murdoch kid.

Depending on the terms of the contract, they can prevent him from competing or producing content for distribution.....for a while, anyway.

aka Tucker in deep trouble for breaking the contract Carlson who cost Fox News $700 million for lying about Dominion Carlson
Any conservative knows that if they have to go to such extremes to deny him a platform he must have something to say that threatens those in power. In fact everyone should know that. We need to know what it is. Be nice if they would tell us what they are scared of.

They just want to silence him for the election.

Can’t have someone speaking common sense to Americans during “election season”. It all has to be controlled, state approved media.

Do y’all think we live in a free republic or something?
He boldly lied.

Is that on appeal? Sounds like just another rigged court decision. Why is he responsible for reporting what other people said???

Or he's a liability issue.

Non compete clauses aren't particularly extreme.

Is the *settlement* on appeal?

And what court decision?

It doesn't sound like you have any idea what's going on. Making your assessment of a 'rigged court decision' pretty meaningless.

Again that doesn't keep him from being hired by a company, that just affects his own company. there is no law that prevents him from being hired and employed in his profession.

Obviously you can't read. Lay off the weed.

Non-compete clauses and buying out his contract would absolutely apply to being hired by someone else. In fact, that would be the most likely outcome that a non-compete clause would apply to.

It applies to either being hired or starting your own business.

He has a contract with Fox News corporation not to go to work with any other company till after the election.

He has used his own personal twitter account to comment on current events.

Fox News is suing him for that, it wants to silence his ability as a private citizen, from being able to comment on current events, and whatever he feels like commenting on.

BUT YES, his contract does say, he can't do what he used to do, for a specified period of time.

I can read fine.

The $785 million settlement wasn't a court decision. It was an agreement between Dominion and Fox.

Why would either appeal their own agreement?

Dudley doesn't seem to understand what non-compete agreements are.

And if they bought out Carlson's contract, they'd definitely have authority over what content he produces for the duration of the contract.

They might have authority over produced, "content," which might be for sale, but it is sort of hazy, if they have bought him, his ideas, and his first Amendment rights . . . he is not a slave.

I doubt its hazy. Twitter would be earning revenue for ads, thus competing with Fox. It wouldn't matter if Carlson was earning money.

And he wouldn't be a slave. Just liable for breach of contract.
