There are millions and millions of "liberal" women and men who believe in a woman's right to "choose" who would never, ever consider having an abortion themselves or would object if their lover wanted one. In fact, they take a very libertarian point of view about abortion. To sum it up, they believe simply that it is not the government's right to tell a woman/couple that they must carry a baby to term. In fact, in this case, they put most Libertarians to shame regarding libertarian thought regarding abortion.

In general, Socialists/Progressives love the Nanny State/Police State. This may be the only instance they want Big Government out of our lives. They're still demanding Taxpayers fund contraception & Abortion. So they don't want the Government out of the bedroom completely. That's just a big myth many still have about Liberals/Socialists. If they truly wanted Government out of the bedroom, they would stop demanding Government force all Citizens to fund Abortion. But i hear ya somewhat on your point.
