GOP legislation would cut off Holder's salary

A Republican lawmaker has introduced legislation that would cut off pay to Attorney General Eric Holder and other federal officials who have been held in contempt of Congress.
Rep. Blake Farenthold, R-Texas, introduced the "Contempt Act" on Tuesday, less than a week after alluding to the measure during a contentious House Judiciary Committee hearing where Holder faced criticism from GOP lawmakers.

"The American people should not be footing the bill for federal employees who stonewall Congress or rewarding government officials’ bad behavior," Farenthold said in a statement. "If the average American failed to do his or her job, he or she would hardly be rewarded."
Under the proposal, the contempt resolution would have to be adopted by either the House or Senate for the official to lose their pay. The GOP-led House voted in 2012 to hold Holder in contempt for failing to provide key information on Operation Fast and Furious.

Farenthold's bill would not apply to Lerner, who retired last fall.

"While Ms. Lerner has since retired from the IRS, my bill will at least prevent current and future federal employees, like [Holder], from continuing to collect their taxpayer-paid salaries while held in contempt of Congress," Farenthold said.

I think this is a very good idea to be on the books regardless of the politics of party. It acts as a sanction against any Department head or even the president from thumbing their nose to the American people. Just how long would Holder have been without a pay check now? Could have legs. And no getting retro pay when they finally act on the order they are avoiding.

Political weapon. I do not agree with this.

Then, would you say "Contempt of Court" is a political weapon?

Contemp of court is a crime. Contempt of congress is a perception based on your political affiliation more often than not.
Congress already has too much power imo. Giving them the power to play with peoples income beyond what they already have is asking for trouble.

Are we so short sighted that we can't see the turnabout?

Riiight....next we have a rule that anyone the majority in Congress dosn't like...can be fired and deported .
Fascism anyone?

All very good points, except you have to consider that Contempt of Court usually involves releasing documents that are necessary for an ongoing investigation to continue. Those are facts and not open to party interpretation.

Congress has power that it usually does not employ. Congress could have exercised much harsher penalties for Holders resistance thus far, but has not. Stopping his salary would be an easier road than putting him in jail or impeaching him. Which you would agree would be more politically punishing and difficult.

Turnabout? Cooperate with investigations and no Contempt of Court sanctions will come your way...

Don't stretch a thought to the ridiculous.

Maybe their pay can be withheld until they can get a bill passed that can be signed into law.

This proposed law is politically motivated. Holder, the douchebag, thumbed his nose and this is the result. The WRONG result. Congress has tools at its disposal for such situations. They should exercise them and stop wasting my tax dollars trying to get even.

If I am correct, their "tools" are to put him in jail or to go further and impeach him for this offense combined with others. Congress won't act on that as they should.

But if they had a law that required that anyone held in COC has 30 days to comply or their paychecks are stopped, I believe there would be compliance. NO going to court, going to anyone, "It's out of our hands." He, or anyone in that position would be between a rock and a hard place.

Just think if "The Republicans put Holder in jail." Then there would be political repercussions. If there was a law that stated ANYONE who does not comply with a court order (Contempt of Court) within 30 days, their paychecks will stop until the order is satisfied. There is no Republicans or Democrats did anything. The law is on the books.

The illegal appointees of the NLRB should have had their salaries withheld since the day the Supreme Court said they were illegally appointed!

Judges Accuse Atty General Holder of Disrespecting the Judicial System!

But as Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse already pointed out, Attorney General Eric Holder doesn't follow the law, he advocates a certain point of view. His own Like Obama, Holder makes up his own laws as he goes along, abusing power by acting like a tyrant. The United States Sentencing Commission Thursday unanimously approved an amendment to revise sentencing guidelines for non-violent drug offenders, but not before one commissioner accused Attorney...

This idea is absurd. What the hell is congress going to do to all the non political people who are held in contempt of cangress? Confiscate their paychecks? Seize their bank accounts?

Congress already has too much damn power and I STRONGLY disagree with giving them anymore. Period

Or politicians become more and more divided, more & more partisan, more & more vitriolic.

The solution to that is NOT giving them the power to "punish" their political opponents because they "deem" it appropriate.

Regardless of what you think of this scenario a time will come when someone IS completely forthright but because of partisanship others will think they are holding back and then use this as a weapon to seek something that does not exist.

Bad idea is bad.
