I told them they do not need subsidies. The ACA is not for everyone, maybe we should just have universal healthcare. Would that be better for you?

Well I guess I'm old school, I think people should take responsibility for their own lives, if you make bad decisions you and your family pay the price. I have no problem with the States having short term safety nets, that's their job, taking care of people. The feds are responsible of managing a union of 50 sovereign States, like Madison said the powers of the federal government are few and defined. Taking care of the individual citizen is outside those defined powers. So no, your definition of universal health care would not be better. It's become rationed health care everywhere it's been tried.
