First off humanity isn't in a 'war for its life'. A small group of insane losers are attacking, all of humanity, but they have no way to win. Most of this hysteria is media driven because they keep these images and they use fear driven verbage to get people to watch. It distorts the reality entirely.

We need to defeat these people but 'humanity is in a fight for its life'? Drama queen 101. We defeated two full sized nations that had 10's of millions of soldiers, modern navies, armies, and air forces, and they were as fanatical as the losers today. Yet we utterly destroyed that threat. Today's threat is a pimple on a fly in comparison, its just the tactics being used are MEANT to make the threat seem infinitely larger which is pretty much what TERRORISM means. Small targeted horrific type attacks meant to make them appear as huge catastrophes when in the big picture they are very small. And today's media environment only feeds into this by nonstop coverage, showing gritty images over and over nonstop, using fearmongering tones and language.

Is there a threat? Of course. Can we defeat it? Please. Somehow we can face down the Soviet Union who had 5,000 nukes targeted at our cities and the largest army in the world but 30,000 men with AK47s and C4 are a mortal threat to humanity?

Turn off your tv and your radio. Fear is what keeps ears and eyes glued, which is what sells product.
