Sorry to hear this. He was one tough guy, unlike his pansy son, Michael. RIP, Mr. Douglas.
Not Michael....He's the Progs great American President! Virile and macho and grounded to Progressive socialist beliefs.

I know he got a lot of grief from the RIght and the Hollywood cowards when he blew off the Blacklist.
Brave thing to do back then
I remember that those who kowtowed to McCarthy were pissed at this scene between Olivier and Laughton about the "list", The Right even picketed the film.

103 years old is one hell of an accomplishment. Not bad for the son of a rag salesman.

"My father, who had been a horse trader in Russia, got himself a horse and a small wagon, and became a ragman, buying old rags, pieces of metal, and junk for pennies, nickels, and dimes.... Even on Eagle Street, in the poorest section of town, where all the families were struggling, the ragman was on the lowest rung on the ladder. And I was the ragman's son.[4]"

"Growing up, Douglas sold snacks to mill workers to earn enough to buy milk and bread to help his family. Later, he delivered newspapers and during his youth he had more than forty jobs before becoming an actor."

"As an actor and philanthropist, Douglas received three Academy Award nominations, an Oscar for Lifetime Achievement, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom."

Yes, all great actors from a by gone era. Just wished we were still being entertained by characters that even though they weren't perfect in their personal lives, at least they played roles that were decent and honorable while upon the stage in front of the public body. This is the very reason why people remember them so well, and that their acting careers lasted for decades and decades long.

Can’t think of any young actors today in their 20s and 30s that have true star power.

Borgnine was a great actor and under appreciated but he was not a star
Nobody ever went to see a movie because Ernest Borgnine was in it
He was a great actor, and during an age of great actors, most went to see movies because of the presentation of the storylines, and the multitudes of stars that were cast in the movie. Your point was moot.

Exactly, and that means that there is a problem today.

I never missed an episode of McHales Navy, but with his acting, as in Marty, he was great IMHO.
Being a "star" requires promotion. Being a great actor requires talent.

Nobody ever went to see a movie because Ernest Borgnine was in it. The actors I listed, some who were not as good an actor as Borgnine, were stars

Their name at the top of the billing ensured the public would turn out.

Agree

In many of his early movies he played the heavy. He was the guy the stars beat up.
Montgomery Clift in From Here to Eternity
Spencer Tracy in Bad Day at Black Rock

He was not always the loveable Commander McHale

They were all unique and all irreplaceable. None of today's actors in my opinion are even fit to shine their shoes. The same with all the great actresses from Old Hollywood, Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwyck, Joan Crawford, Katharine Hepburn etc.

When Old Hollywood was called The Golden Era it really was, such an incredible amount of original talent in ONE place all at the SAME time, this has never been repeated and it never will be repeated.
I don’t see the star power you had back then. Actors you will see a movie just because they are in it.

Tom Hanks, Robert DeNiro, Redford, Eastwood are still around

The only one of those very big stars from Old Hollywood that I can think is still around is Olivia de Havilland she is 103 years in age:

A great actor is dead. RIP to a wonderful talent who certainly had a long run. RIP, Mr. Douglas.

More talent will rise up, as it does in every generation. The cream always rises to the top. I'm hoping for more great scripts and characters that will allow the talented to strut their stuff. People like Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, Daniel Day-Lewis are already solidifying their legendary status. There are more to follow.

I just love the craft of acting. It is unique. It takes so much to do it properly and it all has to come from within.
