Back in September, Alexandria Marie Shields and Taylor Butcher booked the Knights of Columbus hall in Madison, Indiana for the reception that will follow their upcoming wedding ceremony. On Monday, Knights of Columbus Council 934 called the couple to tell them it was refunding their deposit as they do not agree with same-sex unions. Wednesday evening, the council reversed course and has agreed to let them have the facility.

In an interview with ThinkProgress on Wednesday, Butcher described the past two days as “very frustrating.” Months into the wedding preparations, they suddenly received a call Monday informing them that they could not use the venue — which was not even going to be used for the ceremony — because the organization cannot support a same-sex wedding. She and her fiancee already sent out save the dates and posted a wedding website with the details of their location. Now, she worried, if they need to find a venue outside of Madison, many of the hundreds of invited family and friends will have to find new hotels.

But in a Facebook post Wednesday evening, the Knights of Columbus said it would allow the reception after all. It posted “Council 934 regrets that there was some confusion over the hall rental request and that no contract was ever signed. We are happy to accommodate Taylor’s request to hold her reception there and we will waive the usual hall rental fee, given the misunderstanding that occurred.” As of press time, Butcher said no one from the council had directly contacted them to share this news and it is unclear whether this is a one-time exception or indicative of genuine a policy change.

Same-sex marriage became legal in Indiana in October, after the Supreme Court let stand an appeals court ruling that the state’s ban violated the U.S. constitution and was “based on hate.” But Indiana has no statewide non-discrimination protections for LGBT citizens and Madison is not one of the handful of Indiana localities that prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

The Knights of Columbus, a tax-exempt fraternal benefit society, calls itself the “strong right arm” of the Catholic Church and has spent millions to oppose LGBT equality, abortion, euthanasia, and pornography. But while the national organization explicitly prohibits the rental of Knights’ facilities to those who “who do not support the legal protection of unborn children, or who advocate the legalization of assisted suicide or euthanasia,” it has not done taken that stand on the issue of same-sex marriage. Neither the local council nor its Grand Knight responded immediately to a ThinkProgress inquiry about its policies.

Butcher said that she and Shields have been overwhelmed by the support they’ve received. “We’ve gotten a lot more support on this than we thought we were going to be getting. We weren’t expecting people to go to their Facebook page and rate them with 1 star.” And, she said, “because everyone we know is making a big deal out of it, that’s what’s helping and making them feel the pressure.” Perhaps responding to the uproar, the council had posted on Tuesday evening that it was “discussing this issue and exploring options to resolve it. A portion of the council disagrees with the decision that was made.”

No catholics are performing marriages for same sex couples. The title is a lie. It was a reception hall.

A person calls changing minds about homosexual marriage evil.

So I'm disgusted that the poster thinks that the homosexuals who get married and heterosexuals who support it are evil.

I'm not trying to change anything. I'm not christian and I could careless what any christian sect does in their church.

Meanwhile some think it's evil to have a homosexual wedding reception at a church.

Why can't you be happy to live your life as you choose? Why do you have to force everyone else to live that way too? Why do you believe you have the right to take freedoms from people?

If that church wants to change their minds about having that reception they have that right. It's not up to you or anyone else to judge what they do on their own private property.
