. Been enjoying the reporting on Harvey and Irma. They are the only early warning system most people have or would you rather it be like the 1920's where people are just going about their daily lives thinking just a thunderstorm was coming, and then lost their lives by the thousands due to it being a hurricane ? The weather channel and the federal and state and local officials were quick to cover their asses and tell everyone to get on the road and head north but it's likely that the politicians and the weather people had helicopters standing by. What happens to families in overheated cars or when they have flat tires and when they are stuck in twelve hour traffic jams? What happens to a family with an infant and dirty diapers and hungry kids who have to piss in bottles in front of each other on the road to nowhere? . I have two empty houses on the east coast, and both were to be occupied by family members fleeing the storm in that area of the country. Of course they didn't come, but the offer was there if they needed it. Not only are the warnings great for us who are not on the east coast, but they are great for those who make the decision to either evacuate or not. Mandatory doesn't mean MANDATORY, as their are people staying, but it is a warning to those who don't live in proper structures to withstand a hurricane. If you stay, well it's on you then.
