Kentucky college making video games an official sport offers scholarships CNS News

jan 7 2015
PIKEVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A private liberal arts college in Kentucky says it will make video games an official sport and start offering scholarships to gamers in the fall.

The move makes the University of Pikeville one of only a few schools in the nation to provide scholarships to those who play "League of Legends," a multiplayer online battle arena game, according to WYMT-TV

Pikeville plans will offer 20 scholarships when it begins "League of Legends" competition play in the fall.

"It will be a regime a lot like athletics," Parsons said. "They'll have to have a certain GPA. We'll look at them like student athletes. There will be practice time and video time when they have to study other teams for upcoming competitions."

At least one other school — Robert Morris University in Chicago — has made the game an official sport and offers scholarships.

Sports is big money.

That's a private school there. I guess they can do whatever the fuck they want.

Or can they? :dunno:

No such thing as a truly private school. They all get some govt money.
And you want that to be a back door in telling people what they can and cannot 'study' in school? So much for freedom.

The answer is to get government out of paying for college in the first place, not demanding that they only teach what you think is necessary. Games have become just like sprts BTW where the players are making quite a lot of money:

So they make money. There is no social value to video games anymore than there is to golf. THINK

Or football or restaurants or almost every single thing that we do. It is not your place to decide what I need to be doing or studying. Perhaps you could be bothered to THINK and while your at it find out what freedom actually looks like.

Doubt if it will be a major...

... mebbe a minor...

... likely it will start out as an extracurricular activity.

Uncle Ferd's a phenom at Space Invaders...

... he goin' to Lexington to apply fer one o' dem scholarships...

... Granny gonna buy him a raccoon skin coat if he gets one...

... he been practicin' up on singin' Boola-boola.

That's right. Most jobs have ZERO social value and should not be taught in schools. We don't need lawyers or bankers or entertainers or athletes. We do need engineers and businessmen and plumbers and farmers. THINK
