Psychology people always enjoy examining the behavioral thought processes of humankind. I recently finished reading a thesis on Morality and Ethics in the 21st Century. It's a private paper, I don't have links or anything I can share from it other than the wisdom I gleaned. It was a fascinating exploration into the premise of what people would do and how far they will go in general regarding basic morality and ethics.

What I want to do is recreate the research in the form of a poll question. Each answer has it's own set of circumstances and tells a lot about the individual's capacity in determining their own moral limits and boundaries. It relies on honesty but we are seldom truly honest in answering such questions openly. Therefore, the rules make your vote visible but you have to vote to see the votes. We're all in this dilemma together... There are no right and wrong answers to the poll question. Each answer contains something of a positive and negative value. It takes a certain amount of courage to just ponder the question.

The Question:

You can pick any of the following to be your "Kingpin" status for the remainder of your life...
You are never going to be caught and punished for any crime... you are untouchable.
There is ZERO chance you will ever be assassinated or imprisoned by anyone.
This includes your immediate family and "inner circle". You truly ARE The Kingpin...

I guess I just have the drive to be a successful untouchable KingPin. I'd be the one supplying the guy with his "intelligence".. If -- I got the same deal.. Thing about Kingpins is -- they usually die early and ugly.. Because of "other kingpins"..

I think I'll be the religion kingpin. And all of those other kingpins will worship me.

That way I could make them fight to the death.

Oddly enough, I find myself strangely in concurrence with Pogo on this issue, and NO, I am not going commie snowflake on you all, four guys on horseback have not just ridden by and Gabriel is not blowing his horn. Though I am far from a perfect individual, my foibles are legion, I have always tried to be on the other side of evil.

That all being said, what I vote here is never going to come to pass, and the game is no fun unless people play, so "all in" then.
I will go with Kingpin Mercenary.
Watch your arses, bitches, Stasha the Surgeon will hunt you down and cut you up into itty-bitty pieces!

It's time for the first major reveal from the study.

The researcher found that a majority of participants were hesitant or reluctant to even participate in the exercise. This is because it challenges our moral perspectives to even think in terms of the choices. People who feel their moral and ethical character is strong, or feel the need to portray that image, are far more likely to "bolt" and opt out of participation as they see the question as an affront to their personal morals. It doesn't mean their character is strong, their character could be weak and vulnerable and they have a moral insecurity which they are trying to protect.

But it is a natural instinct or inclination to say you don't want to be any kind of "Kingpin" in the traditional sense.

Indeed, when I first read it I was reluctant to participate. Then I read the whole thing again, wishing I could read the paper that inspired this post. Anyway, I went with mercenary.

Which did you choose, Boss?

The poll has a false premise, not everyone wants money that way. I like earning money the old fashioned way and busting my hump. Gives me a sense of self worth knowing I am a positive force in my little world. Crooked people are takers that feed off of society like parasites.

Virtually everyone feels this way. The poll isn't asking you whether you want to be a kingpin or not. It's also not asking if you prefer making money another way.

It isn't possible it's true? Sounds like some projection going on.

It's very much true. That's what I said. It's perfectly natural. The challenge for everyone is to overcome their moral barriers which prevent them from answering the question. The thesis studied where people go from there.

So what the hell is the point?

It's like you knocking on my door and offering me a poke in the eye, a punch in the throat, or a knee in the temple. I'm not going to choose one out of a menu that has nothing I want. Why would I do that?

As much as it pains me (LOL) I sort of agree with Pogo. Are we going to get some feedback on what our choices mean or are you just jerking us off here?

I will definitely be sharing information I gained from the thesis research. At this point, I don't want to sway the poll by revealing too much. I had hoped to get a decent number of participants before I get into the intricacies.

So what the hell is the point?

It's really just a psychological exercise.

It's like you knocking on my door and offering me a poke in the eye, a punch in the throat, or a knee in the temple. I'm not going to choose one out of a menu that has nothing I want. Why would I do that?

In order to participate in the exercise.

Again, your option is not whether or not to be a Kingpin. For most people, that's an easy choice. After all, not many of us are aspiring Kingpins, right? The exercise can only attempt evaluation on those who choose to participate. The dichotomy is, you have to overcome your own moral proclivities to participate.

I will go into more detail about this later but for now, just know that you are in the vast majority in feeling somewhat conflicted about participating. That's precisely what makes "Kingpin" such a great psychological challenge.

No idea how many of us are aspiring Kingpins but I've already decided that I don't accept the concept of forced Kingpinism. So you can't make me.

To paraphrase the old adage, if nominated for Kingpinship I refuse to run; if appointed I refuse to serve.

Unless of course I could be the Kingpin of Defiance, but I don't see that listed.

The exercise can only attempt evaluation on those who choose to participate. The dichotomy is, you have to overcome your own moral proclivities to participate.

The flaw is in order to participate one is forced into picking the least-repulsive choice out of a list of completely undesirable positions. If they're all undesirable, then choosing any one of them would be dishonest.

I will go into more detail about this later but for now, just know that you are in the vast majority in feeling somewhat conflicted about participating.

OK now that is disturbing. Being in the vast majority of anything gives me the creeps.

I would be Kingpin over all other Kingpins.

OP already glommed that gig.

Of course his invitation here is based on an even more fundamental premise, which is that Kingpin .... exists.

Does Kingpin even exist? If Kingpin did not exist, would it be necessary for the OP to invent him?
Or is it possible to be an akingpinist?

Yet another thought --- can one in this exercise choose to be Kingpin of some vice one finds utterly repulsive --- for the purpose of using one's Kingpin Power to then eliminate that vice?

--- Along the lines of this....
