The failure of Amtrak in effect a product of state intervention a and monopolization. Amtrak has no profit incentive to innovate or to find ways to lower cost to improve their infrastructure. If there were a free market there would be competition amongst companies to provide the lowest cost product at the greatest quantity.

You're not making any sense. How can Amtrak, or any company for that matter cut costs and improve infrastructure at the sametime.

If cutting costs is your only path to success "by choice,"and therefore profitability, it is in fact a recipe for disaster and will soon enough lead to the company's demise.

The engineer was not competent, promoted for political reasons, it's apparent. But now a days I wonder about fellow drivers, the stupidity and incompetence of people operating motor vehicles. Sounds like a good idea, but installing the PTC will probably take care of the problem. The question is, will Amtrak have enough money to do it by Dec 2015 now that Republicans have voted to cut their funding even more.
