You don't need a "Special" prosecutor to indict anyone. The vast majority of indictments are done by ordinary, regular garden variety prosecutor.

The idea of a "Special" prosecutor is for headlines, and leaking possibilities, in the political campaign- something both the 1/6 committee and Special prosecutor can do.

The Special Prosecutor serves the purpose of removing an investigation that might have been accused of being some "politically motivated witch-hunt" from the purview and jurisdiction of Biden's Executive Branch Justice Department.

What this tells us is that Merrick Garland has got a good case to file charges with but instead of making the call himself he is giving the evidence to Smith for a second opinion before any indictments are unsealed.

If Smith's investigators dig into the evidence (a large volume of it compiled and provided by the January 6th Committee) and determine no crimes have been committed then that's the end of the matter and we'll just have to deal with the fallout of that.

If, on the other hand, Smith's team determines that the evidence warrants indictments then....we are in uncharted territory with felony prosecution commencing, for the first time in history, of a former U.S. President.

But nobody will ever be able to (credibly) say again that the ordeal was "politically motivated."

Garland just nixed that ruse.

This should be interesting. Most of the investigative work has probably already been done. It will not drag out long.

Pure political in trying to distract from the threat's by Republican's to investigate everything Biden. The abuse of power is relentless amongst this administration.

And he "admitted" this because, given that Garland is an appointee of Trump's ( now) political rival, (since Trump has announced his candidacy) the next logical course of action is for Garland to recuse himself from the case and hand it over to an impartial, Independent Prosecutor who cannot be accused of just being an extension of Biden's Executive Branch.

That's all this does.

It makes it impossible for anyone to call it a "politically motivated witch-hunt" anymore.

From now on there is only the evidence and what does or does not result from it.
