Prep your basements now. Stock up your basements with food, bedding, water, light sources, weapons, ammo, first aid and whatever else you and your family might need to survive down there for weeks or longer, after a local nuclear impact. A good portable toilet and gravity shower are also a plus. Odds are it will never happen—nuclear war—but why not be prepared for it ahead of time?
15-30 minutes (missile flight time from mainland Russia or Russian subs/ships
15 minutes for fallout to begin snowing down to the ground after nuclear detonation
24 hours minimum time sheltering in an underground location, such as a basement after impact
A lot of times prepping is just something that makes you feel safe and ready but the reality is it won't matter.
To protect against ambient radiation you would need considerable concrete to protect against it, you'd have to seal your house from the fallout, and even if you came out radiation can last as long as 5 years and anything not destroyed was be irritated like ground water and food. Then you have prevailing winds that will carry the fallout and radiation to further areas.
Then you have to contend with other people looking to take your shit. And you have to deal with there are no hospitals, if you have a compound fracture you're a dead man more than likely. Animals not killed aren't fit to eat as they die from radiation posining.
Plus you have the psychological damage nuclear war inflicts. Even people who consider themselves a hard ass would break under the pressure or suffer deep depression.
Unless you live out in the total middle of nowhere a 100 miles from even a small city you're shit out of luck. And even those folks are in for some rough times.
