Obama the diplomat.

How's that reset button working?

In wishing Bush well, Putin was poking another stick at obama who could not bring himself to do that. Putin showed class while obama shows crass.

Obama cites 'mixed success' in dealing with Putin
Aug 10,`13 - President Barack Obama says he's had mixed success in persuading Russian President Vladimir Putin to think "forward as opposed to backward" on a variety of issues and is reassessing the U.S.-Russia relationship.
WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama says he's had mixed success in persuading Russian President Vladimir Putin to think "forward as opposed to backward" on a variety of issues and is reassessing the U.S.-Russia relationship. While senior officials from the two countries met at the State Department, Obama told reporters at a news conference Friday that Putin's return to the Kremlin last year had brought about "more rhetoric on the Russian side that was anti-American, that played into some of the old stereotypes about the Cold War contest between the United States and Russia." "I've encouraged Mr. Putin to think forward as opposed to backward on those issues, with mixed success," he said.

Obama told reporters that he decided not to attend a summit with Putin planned next month for Moscow because "Russia has not moved" on a range of issues where the U.S. would like to see progress. He said his unhappiness with Russia granting temporary asylum to National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden was one reason, but not the only one, for his decision. "I think the latest episode is just one more in a number of emerging differences that we've seen over the last several months around Syria, around human rights issues where, you know, it is probably appropriate for us to take a pause, reassess where it is that Russia's going, what our core interests are, and calibrate the relationship so that we're doing things that are good for the United States and, hopefully, good for Russia," Obama said.

Obama said that no one could hope for 100 percent agreement and that differences could not be completely disguised. But he said U.S.-Russian cooperation is important. "We're going to assess where the relationship can advance U.S. interests and increase peace and stability and prosperity around the world," Obama said. "Where it can, we're going to keep on working with them. Where we have differences, we're going to say so clearly." Obama praised trade and arms control successes that the U.S. and Russia were able to seal when he was dealing with former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Obama played down suggestions that he and Putin do not get along. "I don't have a bad personal relationship with Putin," he said. "When we have conversations, they're candid. They're blunt. Oftentimes, they're constructive."

But he took a shot at the often dour-looking Russian leader for his demeanor in meetings and appearances before reporters. "He's got that kind of slouch, looking like the bored kid in the back of the classroom," Obama said. "But the truth is, is that when we're in conversations together, oftentimes it's very productive." He urged Putin to think in broad terms and not view the United States as an enemy. "If issues are framed as if the U.S. is for it, then Russia should be against it, or we're going to be finding ways where we can poke each other at every opportunity, then probably we don't get as much stuff done," Obama said.

August 9, 2013 - June 27, 2013 - ABC News: [President] Obama said has called neither Russian President Vladimir Putin nor Chinese President Xi Jinping to ask that Snowden be turned over because "I shouldn't have to" - expelling a criminal should be a routine legal matter. "No, I am not going to be scrambling jets to get a 29-year-old hacker," Obama said.
August 7, 2013 - New York Times: Obama canceled next month's Moscow summit meeting [with Russian President Vladimir Putin], ending for now his signature effort to transform Russian-American relations. It was the first time an American leader had called off such a trip in decades. Oh, yeah. That Obama swagger is working really well everywhere outside of Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. President Obama had to do something to express displeasure when his Russian counterpart granted Snowden political asylum in the Motherland for at least a year, so he called off a meeting with Putin. That was after the Chinese just about allowed Snowden early boarding on a flight from Hong Kong to Moscow to get him out of their collective hair.

Fact is, no foreign government, leader, or organization has ever thought much of Barack Obama. Remember this bit of hubris from October 2009? From CNN: President Obama traveled overseas -- in the middle of debates over health care and Afghanistan -- to make his personal pitch to bring the 2016 Olympics to his hometown. President Obama personally appealed to IOC members for the 2016 summer Olympic Games to be in Chicago. But despite their efforts, the Obamas will come home empty-handed.

The 2016 Summer Games will not be in Chicago. They will be in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We've recounted the failures of the Obama foreign policy many times. He doesn't have a foreign policy. There is a misconception in the United States about how the world sees us. Most people think the rest of the world respects our power. That's wrong. What they respect is our willingness to use that power to protect our interests - near, middle, and long-term. Obama won't use it - with the exception of his beloved drones - and everyone knows it. Obama won the Presidency on the basis of his opposition to the war in Iraq. No matter what you think about that war, Obama's determination to remove the U.S. from that country has left Iraq in continuing turmoil.

Each side blames the other. Moscow's position is that the United States has sided with Putin's opponents, harmed trade and political ties by picking fights over human rights issues and tried to lecture Russia on how to behave.

Washington's view is that it has made countless policy proposals that have gone unanswered, most notably on reducing nuclear arms, and that the ball is now in Moscow's court. U.S. officials are not holding their breath.

The U.S.-Russian International pissing contest continues, this reminds one of 5 year olds on a kindergarten playground, except for the fact that 5 year olds can generally manage to work out their petty disagreements in relatively short order.

Somebody call Switzerland and ask them to intervene, we need an adult in the room.

When a foreign policy meeting is held at the White House, and Joe Biden is the smartest diplomat in the room...um... it won't end well.

He reset our relations with Russia alright. He reset them to the time of the Cold War. Good job, ya moron!

"Mixed Success"? Try "Total Disaster".

Obama comes across as too pompous to be a very good diplomat. His meetings with other world leaders always come across as a "look at me" tour.

Putin is losing support in Russia and around the world, which hates ugly American Pubs and the hater dupes...He looks like the petuland child, and is supporting history's losers, dictators and bigots.

You know franco- I dig your post. I really look to make sure you have the ole 'hater dupes' in there so that understand I did not miss-judge you. I mean, it take ample effort to ensure you have the hater dupe phrase in your post. I have only ignored one user on this site, and glad you were not it

Why are soo many people hating on our beloved Pres. Obama?? ..

Why does it seem like some so-called "patriotic" Americans are siding with Putin over Obama? Would those same assholes like to live in Russia and that government?

Because you view any criticism as somehow putting Putin above Obama. Not saying that posters have not done so on this board but no examples of that here atm.

Obama is failing at dealing with the Russian situation atm. How are we supposed to respond – with fawning?

No, he gets called out for failures as he should.

I am betting you think "elections" in countries like Iran and Russia are "real".
