Didn't I read that a lot of the objection to these immigrants at the time was cyclical economic recessions? Americans were competing for jobs? So why, with our economy the best in history (according to Trump) are people today so frickin bent out of shape about brown people? I don't get it.

Ever call 10 phone numbers and hear "Bueno!" as the greeting in about 7 of them because no one in the entire household can hold a conversation in English?

Last night, I called Las Vegas, NV. The woman who answered the phone, did not speak English, I asked for the person I was calling, but she she told me (in Spanish) to wait. She then went to get someone to speak to me. That male did not understand English either and did not seem to understand who I was calling. Finally, I got what sounded like a little girl on the phone, who spoke perfect English. When I asked to speak to the person I was calling, she told me they were not home.

How bad is your English language skills that you don't even recognize the name of your own child? I am betting Mom is an illegal, Dad is an illegal, the kid I was calling is a "Dreamer" and the little girl was an anchor baby.

National Voter Registration Act of 1993 - Wikipedia passed by the MAJORITY of the Democrat party which directly approved illegals secure driver's license to aid in voter registration.
This has been the major reason Democrats have favored "open borders'.. political benefits cloaked in pious supposedly humanitarian reasons.

The sad fact is that while yes I AGREE the vast MAJORITY of ILLEGAL immigrants are not criminals, are not
a threat to me, it is the few that ARE getting in that are smuggling not only drugs BUT these innocent immigrants who don't know better!
That is the fact that the DEMOCRATS are aiding and abetting, i.e. encouraging people to break the law their first steps into America!

How can people then be against building a physical barrier that will reduce the chances for people to break
the law in the first place?

I’m not a democrat but I’ll state my case.

I’m for building the wall. In this day and age, you can build a bomb in your garage and drive it into our nation and detonate it.

The immigration argument is dumb. Really; how many break-ins occur in Suburbia, USA? All have a wall of some sort. Some are successful, some are not. Walls do little to prevent passage from the outside to the inside; be it a house, a building, or a community or a nation.

What a wall will do is limit the payload one can carry across the barrier.

The downside. What is not discussed much is the downside. Building a barrier from the nation to a critical water source is about the dumbest thing you can do. What is even more brazenly stupid is that the nature of the wall is that it will have monitored openings. When the rains fall and flooding starts; the wall will direct the water to these openings or across the river. I would think Mexico would have a strong damages suit as a result but what do the communities along the river do when the flood waters come pouring through these openings into their neighborhoods?

Interestingly enough that would have been a serious question a century ago in places like Maine where there were anti-Catholic riots. That's why the Klan gained such a foothold there; the Klan would sell itself with whatever angle applied to that region from a menu of monster stories about "immigration", "Jews", "labor unions", "blacks", "drunks" or in Maine's case "Catholics".
