It has never really been "Operational" in the sense of "ready for combat". It is a vanity project of Putin's to project an image of Moscow Mongol ulus that is not true.

Pity. It was such a nice cash drain while it lasted...(By the way, this is a photo of Kuznetsov being "operational" and NOT on fire) :auiqs.jpg: .

That thing was never operational

The Admiral Kuznetsov has been under maintenance since 2017 and it has never been deployed in the ongoing conflict, which has placed emphasis on land-based systems.

Building a new aircraft carrier is not a priority for Russia because it does not need to project airpower far beyond its borders. Russia has no plan for a world conquest as a sea power, while it solely focuses on periodic border skirmishes to safeguard its vital national interests.

🇷🇺🐷🇸🇦Maskal maintenance, some of the worst:auiqs.jpg: in the world. There is a reason why in Finnish verb "Ryssiä" (Muscovy ) , roughly meaning "to totally fail something".

That ship is not, has never been, and will never be an Aircraft Carrier.

It is exactly what the classification states, it is an Aircraft Cruiser. And that ship has never really worked right. It was plagued with problems from the time the keel was laid, and took over 13 years from construction starting to it entering operational service.

And the damned thing has been in the yard undergoing "maintenance" for the last 7 years. And in this latest maintenance cycle it has had a crane crash onto her deck (2018) and at least two major fires (2019 and 2022). I would to be honest be surprised if it ever returns to full service. If any ship in the Russian Navy needs to be retired, it is that thing. It has spent far more of its life on the wharf than it ever has at sea. Not unlike most of the submarines of Russia and China.

yes, It's unsinkable during a war. Enemies would prefer this junk to be floating and draining putin's resources. If there is any Muscovite naval asset that can describe what Muscovite currently suffer, Admiral Kuznetsov is that vessel.
