By far, the biggest factor in the increased debt was the massive drop in tax revenue due to the market crash and the lower tax rates promoted under Bush. Now that the economy is picking up again, revenues are up, but still not to the levels they were under Clinton. Current deficits are now lower than the average for the past forty years as a percentage of GDP.

I was in Russia in 2000 with my wife and father in law who still lives there. Prior and the first two rears after the 9/11 attacks every Russian I met had strong positive feelings for the U.S. And very little interest in Russian nationalism.

That dramatically turned immediately after Bush invaded Iraq in 2003. My trips back and published news shows the Russians think America was nuts for invading a sovereign nation that was being satisfactorily verified disarmed of WMD by 200 UN inspectors by February 2003.

Putin warned Bush that the balance that existed in the ME would be upset if the U.S. Invaded Iraq for no valid reason at all.
