This Task Force, along with police departments all over the country, report large numbers of child pornography-related arrests on a regular basis. And what is immediately apparent almost every time that people are charged with these offenses are two things - firstly, that people accused of these crimes come from all walks of life and secondly, that almost all of the accused people have no previous criminal record.

A recent crackdown in May of 2014, as reported in the New York Times, resulted in the arrest of 70 men and one woman. Those arrested included religious leaders, medical professionals, professionals such as architects and lawyers, teachers, and coaches.

These arrestees are people, without criminal records, who are productive and sometimes prominent members of society and have a great deal at stake.

Some criminal defense attorneys believe that the media needs to use greater restraint when making these arrests public. They know from defending these cases that all kinds of people get caught up in the law enforcement web. However, after investigation and legal defense, many of these cases are either dropped or do not result in a conviction. Yet the arrest alone results in a potentially innocent person being named and shamed in the media long before they have been found guilty of anything.

Simply because more arrests are being made does not mean that more crimes are being committed.

It is entirely possible for innocent people to end up being entrapped by these "sting" operations. If the charges are dropped there is no way to erase the publicity and reputational harm.

In fairness to kosher, the law is obsessed with it because it's a big problem. That she, I, and others discuss it isn't that we enjoy discussing or debating it, so much as it's a considerable problem and issue in law enforcement circles.
