We have something like 150 of these jobs that pay about $150,000 each. That the Senate has to approve all of their replacements is going to be interesting I think; can you imagine the hearings?

I think we don’t need so many ambassadorships myself. But I am sure we could find better things for the Senate, their staffs, not to mention the FBI and State Department to be doing rather than trying to ram through 150 vettings.

Will they all come from Exxon?

So Obama kept how many political appointment Ambassadors from the Bush Presidency?

The Ambassador nowadays is usually window dressing. All the professional diplomats will remain and will hold over the embassies, just like every other Presidential change.

Not sure. I was more commenting on the FBI having to do backgrounds on the 15 cabinet secretaries, gawd knows how many EO staffers, other new personnel and now, 150 ambassadors????

In some cases, the Ambassador is a FSO who worked their way up. Firing them for no reason is silly.

Strangely not a big deal when Obama did the same in 2008 in the midst of the Great Recession...

The incoming Obama administration has notified all politically-appointed ambassadors that they must vacate their posts as of Jan. 20, the day President-elect Barack Obama takes the oath of office, a State Department official said.

The clean slate will open up prime opportunities for the president-elect to reward political supporters with posts in London, Paris, Tokyo and the like. The notice to diplomatic posts was issued this week.

Political ambassadors sometimes are permitted to stay on briefly during a new administration, but the sweeping nature of the directive suggests that Obama has little interest in retaining any of Bush's ambassadorial appointees.

Maybe not so strange...Liberals suffer from chronic selective outrage. It's all dependent on a (D) or an (R).

He's only firing the political ones, same as Obama did when he came into office. and every other president before him. The Diplomatic staffs onsite have handled month long transitions before.

When Trump leaves office, will you be this concerned about all those checks that need to be done?

When Bill Clinton was elected in 1992, the first thing he did was fire all the federal US Attorneys in the country. Shit happens.

I don't think it is all of the Ambassadors, it is just the ones appointed by Obama.

Oh, I though all were getting the heave-ho. Thanks for setting me straight.

At this point, they all were appointed by Obama. Marty says it was just the “political appointees”. Not sure how you differentiate but I hope they do.

This is nothing new, people get replaced by the incoming President. Why weren't you concerned when Obama did this? Seems like the partisan nutters are getting worked up over nothing.

it's very easy. Non-political appointees are FSO's with decades of service. Political appointees are given posts in places like London, and get them based on how well they campaigned for the President-elect at the time (i.e. how much $$ they brought in).

FSO's get posts like Sudan. Political appointees get Paris.

The news report I read said 35. It is supposed to be Obama appointees.

Under Obama it was okay, now it is a disaster of epic proportions. I wonder why Obama didn't do anything when he was in office.
