Well, if it's deemed his lawyer made this payment or campaign contribution then it would be illegal simply because the most you can contribute to a politician is $2,700. That could put Cohen in trouble for giving the money and the Trump campaign in trouble for accepting.

Or, if the money came from Trump the company then that would be an illegal campaign donation as corporations are not allowed to directly contribute to a candidate.
