People need cars, but not guns. And, we could get that number down greatly, if we had the will.

Perhaps we should treat gun ownership as we do automobile ownership. Require state testing to obtain a license, require insurance, require age and vision restrictions for gun operation, require an annual license.

The fact is, cars were not specifically designed to kill people, guns are. While the state has mandated safety improvements to cars (seat belts, air bags, ABS braking systems, horns, lights and safety glass, gun manufacturers have designed guns to fire more rapidly with a sustained rate of fire.

That's an interesting graph and i wish you would give a link. I went to DOT and couldn't find it. BTW - it would be better to see a graph of deaths per mile instead of per person.

Notice the big drop around 1974. That's when we went to the 55 mph speed limit. We'd get a similar drop if we did it today but libs say no way.

Deaths have also gone way down because of the fewer driving under the influence..Back in the 1950's and 60's the cops would let the person go, call a cab..next night back out on the road drunk.
