One of the main reasons for the war was that the southern cotton growers were making too much money and getting too much power. Europe was out bidding the north for cotton. The North put up blockades at the ports to prevent the exportation of cotton. The north set up ridiculous rules for reapportionment that counted slaves as 3/5ths of a person to limit southern representation in Congress. The goal was to make the south economically dependent on Northern masters.
