Suddenly, Republicans favor Free Press over National Security

I tried in vain to find a link to yesterday's front page USA Today article about recent polls they took regarding the so-called scandals of the Obama administration.

Here's one interesting find: A majority of republicans now think a free press trumps national security.

Obviously, they now believe this because the Obama administration spied on AP reporters. It makes Obama look bad.

In 10 previous polls republicans usually thought national security trumped a free press.

One word...hypocrites.

Now, all of a sudden, democrats favor national security, but during GW Bush's term of office, they couldn't say enough bad things about the Patriot Act and warrantless wire tapping.

because those things are great right?

I may not be paying a great deal of attention, but I haven't really noticed any dem outside the admin really getting behind this.

Personally, I tend to be a bit middle of the road on the issue. But then I'm not dem. LOL Bushii's most pernicious assault on the press was not via spying, but by intentionally lying about sources of womd intelligence. Cheney/libby repeatedly asserted they had intell independent from a news souce, when in fact they were the news source.

But, phone records and roving taps ..... it seems to me the main danger is if they are used for non terror uses. For example, in boston the cops clearly had the power to search through homes for the bombers without needing warrants. But, suppose they found a pot grow in a basement, and then got a warrant and came back. I don't think it happened, but there's a temptation.

Not unlike the dems being outraged over Nixon's misuing the IRS back in the 70's and blowing off Obama's admin doing the same....same kind of hypocrits

Yep,

Everything they have done for the past 40 years have been exactly what Hugo Chavez and Castro did. That's what the democrats want here....What the fuck has it ever done to improve the lives of the poor? I ask you seriously.

I'm for having the best
Technology
Science
Living standards

Guess what none of those countries you're modeling after give us that. How can you fight so hard for something that sucks?

That was a response after this county was attacked by Muslim terrorists. These wire taps were being used to ferret out home-grown terrorism of the Islamic variety. Now, they are being used against American news reporters, whose ideology differs from that of the President. That doesn't make it right, period. I saw how the Patriot Act could be misused, and it is being misused now by the Obama administration in direct violation of the first Amendment.

Who cares about this topic?

A Special Prosecutor now being pushed by Dems......nobody cares about the other nonsense here, although, lets face it......in recent days, the left is having to bend over and take the big one in the rear end.

Its funny......in politics, every ideology has to take its turn getting it up the pooper. These days, after a few years of winning, the progressives now they have to go through some fAiL.

The Obama administration illegally spied on reporters and the left wants to conduct a poll about republican opinion? Talk about hypocrites.

The media works for the democratic party. Seriously.

Desperate times call for desperate posts and the radical left is truly desperate. All their hopes and dreams of a socialist empire rested on the Hussein administration's successful disregard of the Bill of Rights.

Probably because no such pools exist, except in your mind of course.

Although most Repugnant-cans and Depot-crats probably do indeed feel this way, I hardly doubt they would admit that in a poll, can you link any polls showing either liberals or conservatives saying they favored National Security over a Free Press?

I finally found a link to the whole dern article.

Poll: Obama agenda to get stuck in mud over Benghazi, IRS

In the article I quote "62% of Americans say it's more important that the government be able to report stories vs. 23% who say it's more important for the government to be able to censor stories for national security...These results reflect a swing by republicans to the side of the press--possibly because it puts them at odds with a democratic president. In 2006, 53% of Republicans said it was more important that the government censored stories in the interest of national security."

Like I said...hypocrites.

What is so wrong with this?

Short story time......
We were pulling in to port in Portsmouth, England. First time an American navy ship - much less a Battleship - had been there since WWII (or something like that).
There were small craft every-freekin-where, waving, honking, and welcoming us.
As I was 'manning the rail' a sailboat came along side and two very enthusiastic females were using the mast as a stripper pole whilst shedding their bikinis.
Fast-forward.....
As we exited the base for Liberty in town, I stopped for some cigs. The shop owner had the news on and there were the ladies, in all their glory, on the news!!
Apparently (back then, at least) England didn't believe in censoring their news.

That's how it should be.

Nope, if this is about the AP phone records that DOJ subpoenaed, those were NOT wire taps. DOJ requested & got phone records - # called, # calling in, duration, time & date. NOT the actual content of the conversation, fax, e-mail, whatever it was.

& yah, unless it's a legit national security concern, DOJ should not be mucking around in AP's (nor anyone else's) electronic comms. I'm still waiting to hear what the Obama admin thought it was doing. There'll probably be hell to pay, & if they don't have a legit case, they deserve all the criticism they get ...

Nope, try again. Getting the phone records is different from spying - & if there actually is a national security concern, then it's authorized under the PATRIOT Act. All the more reason to revisit & sharply revise PATRIOT. But that's a different concern, for a different day. (But we need to hurry - if the media are cowed, who's going to tell us anything approximating the truth about what goes on in our name in WADC & the Pentagon, Langley, NSA, & the rest of the alphabet soup of the National Security State?)

The more the Obama admin goes after whistleblowers & leaks, intimidates the press, etc. - the more it looks like an enormous mistake to throw the Wikileaks case, J. Assange & his army source under the bus. The purists in the press may sniff about Assange's sexual charges - if they were ever made; assertions is more like it - but he hasn't been charged yet, TMK, let alone tried & convicted. Meanwhile, the press is turning up their nose @ data - the v. info they must have to make the case for the slow garrotting of what used to be press freedoms, & the nearly sacred duty of the free press: to blow the whistle, to inform us poor apes what's being done in our names in WA, in the various Wars on Terror, in Gitmo, in the cesspits where Extraordinary Renditions were made to.

Is this what the World should understand we favor?

What will our National Security be worth to us if we destroy our Constitutional Liberties in the process?

No, far from it. You'd have to exempt AM talk radio, all the far-Right fringe publications, R. Murdoch's watercarriers, Coulter, Savage, Limbaugh, the Far Gone Religious Right & their pubs & acolytes, the neocons, PNAC, Heritage Foundation, CATO, The Family, Amway, Blackwater, DeVos, Coors, & all their critters & fellow travellers, Regnery pubs & related, the Rightest colleges trying to develop cadre for the next GOP takeover of government.

The media work for their owners. What's unfortunate is that their owners are mostly big conglomerates, who worship money & power - & power only because it might bring in yet more money. & who certainly feel no responsibilities to their marks, uh, product consumers. More's the pity. It's a kind of electronic tragedy of the commons.
