This is a worry, as China is putting on the charm offensive, as Canada did. Even using the N Korean meetings to give Trump some nice successes. He cannot lose sight of what's at stake.

If Trump betrays the blue collar supporters and the vast number of Americans on this issue, he is hurting his chances in 2020. He absolutely must not fold on China and fair trade, big chances to their system that has exploiting America.

If he wins and makes sure that businesses and jobs come back to America, he will keep and expand his base, I have no doubt about this. The biggest error would be if he assumes they will just vote for him and he opens up the door for the Democrats to steal back the Rust Belt, in particular. They need him to fail in the trade negotiations with China, they need him to keep the Status Quo that so many rejected in 2016.

He knows that China is exploiting America, and people like Wilbur Ross, Peter Navarro and Lighthizer are who he should lean on with these negotiations. Not some of the other lightweights on China who are trying to gain his ear.

With him keeping his promises, this is the big win for him and it closes many doors for the opposition to beat him. It is the issue CNN, MSNBC and all media said Trump would get crushed, as they not so subtly rooted for China over America. If he stays the course, China will lose this battle, America and Trump will win in 2020. So will the rest of the Free World.

I just hope he goes for a huge win, in both substances and the core of the trading relationship. Without question, Navarro needs to be the leader and Point Man on this negotiation. China fears him the most, knowing he isn't going to be lulled into some B.S deal as some other weak, Global Socialists around him would be. Navarro understands the abuses the Chinese government have used against American industries. China is the primary National Security threat America and the world faces.

The reason no one has started a trade war with China yet is that there is really no way to win. It is decades too late for protectionist tariffs.

China is already feeling the pinch. It is never too late to win as long as you confront them aggressively, with the goal of crushing their economy as they have crushed yours.

No doubt that China will see difficulty but tariffs are only good for one thing: to protect an industry that has market supremacy. You cannot make imported TVs so expensive that we will start making them again.

TV's aren't made in China, they are made in S Korea, though I understand your point.

In general, the tariffs are designed to discourage people from exporting manufacturing jobs to China. Primarily, Trump needs to protect your Intellectual Property, as CEO's have been spineless, preferring to get fleeced for short term profits.

This is about National and Economic Security, they go hand in hand.

South Dakota governor says Trump trade wars have 'devastated' the state

So much winning.

I wonder if some Trump supporters were surprised when they discovered they were pro-tariff.

The intellectual property issue is decades too late at this point. China will never give that one up with the meager leverage we have.

What meager leverage do you speak of? How about, "you build in China, we tariff you 35%?" Is that leverage enough?

Also. The U.S government should let companies know, "if you provide access to your technology, we may deny access to the U.S market of certain products if we feel it represents a National Security risk".

Gobs of U.S citizens information are already int he hands of the communists. The next generation must be protected from this.

What also needs to be addressed is their outright continuing theft of intellectual property. MFN should be removed.

China is the only country in the world that makes 20 and 50 year plans. They know that Trump's trade war is only going to last a couple of more years. They are far better equipped to handle economic downturns than we are, in an economic pain contest they will win every time. Their highly managed economy is built to be readily weaponized.

As the (Republican) Governor says, ag is by far the largest industry in the state. Its woes will spread thru the local economies (while creating opportunities for lenders, attorneys, auctioneers). To this point, taxpayers have ameliorated some of the damage with federal aid - crucial during an election year.

It is true, some crops are down, and if it continues might have some repercussions, but from the states own state,of the union-

Farm Income/Crop Prices
South Dakota farm income realized strong earnings from the late 2000’s through 2013, before declining from 2014 through 2017. SD farm income peaked in 2011 at $3.6 billion and registered $0.9 billion in 2017 on an annual basis. Lower crop production due to dry conditions and low crop prices in 2017 was partially offset by higher livestock prices. So far in 2018, income has been steady reflecting strong crop production that is being offset by lower prices.
Crop prices received by SD farmers have been slightly higher for corn, but lower for soybeans and wheat compared to a year ago for the past few months. Ongoing trade disputes continue to be a concern in the Agriculture sector heading in to 2019.

Other sectors are growing. Unemployment for the state is 2.9% currently.
