terminally-ill man today died 'with a smile on his face'

A terminally-ill man today died 'with a smile on his face' and urged his loved-ones to 'seize the moment' as he ended his own life at the Dignitas suicide clinic.

Bob Cole, 68, who was battling an aggressive form of lung cancer, took a lethal cocktail of drugs just 18 months after he watched his wife Ann, 67, die in the same way in Switzerland.

In a text sent from his bedside at 2.25pm this afternoon a friend wrote: 'Dear friends, Bob died with smile on his face to Beethoven's Ode to Joy. He asked you all the seize the time'.

The former carpenter wanted to publicise his death because he wants MPs to 'have the guts' to decriminalise assisted suicide in Britain.

What is your opinion of suicide or assisted suicide?
We treat our pets with more compassion than we do humans. If someone is in pain and it is terminal, they should be given the same compassion we give our pets.

I am in the die with dignity camp. I absolutely stand behind an adult's decision to dictate how they will die.

I have trouble deciding if it is a sin. I know taking a life, is, but would God understand the pain of a terminally ill patient makes the difference? Will you still be saved?

Death is often a selfish thing. When we lose someone that we love, we mourn for our loss not the individual that has passed on. We sometimes have elaborate funerals for ourselves, not for the individual that has passed on. We do this because "we" can't let go. Grieving is a process that we endure not the individual that has passed on. We seek comfort for ourselves not for the individual that has passed on. Perhaps it is not a God that needs to understand the pain of a terminally ill patient.

I was reading that wonderful article earlier this morning, Jackson, and I was very happy to see it in the news and hope all states will become like mine, Oregon, and like WA and VT and vote-in a voluntary Death with Dignity act.

I am agnostic and have no constraints when it comes to things being for or against something because of religion. The Golden Rule and a self-imposed moral guide are my goals as I travel through.

We treat our pets with more compassion than we do humans. If someone is in pain and it is terminal, they should be given the same compassion we give our pets.

We all become pets of the government. A cat with a boken leg can be put down because the owner chooses not to pay to get the leg set. The government chooses not to pay for cancer treatment, euthanize the "pet". If the pet chooses not to be euthanized, an expert will be paid to say the pet is incompetent to make that decision. It must be made for them and is always death.

Do you really trust the government to confine murder only to those wishing to end their own lives?
Not sure what you mean...
What will be done with those who choose not to die but the opinion is they should want to die?
Oh, it is ALWAYS up to the patient. That should be a given.
It should be. It doesn't work out that way. In countries where euthanasia is legal, that power has already been taken from the patient and the patient's family.

Safeguards should be put into place so that doesn't happen. Assisted suicide should not be that prevelant.

I would hope that doesn't happen here. It should always be initiated by the patient.

Hope is not a strategy. Give away that power and you never get it back. Assisted suicide for the terminally ill sounds like a good idea, a compassionate idea, it really is a clever way of seizing the power of life and death.

What is your opinion of suicide or assisted suicide?

I think people should be allowed to die with dignity.
Let me guess. You believe that doctors should be able to rip arms and legs and other body parts from a baby still in the womb? Am I right

You will encounter all sorts of problems when you let others define God for you. If you want to die with dignity it should be up to you, no one can suffer for you. I worked in a VA hospital while in college and saw how some guys deteriorated to the point of not being able to do anything but shit themselves and cry. If some religious zealot is cool with that they can go eff themselves.

I think the subject of abortion is between a woman and her doctor.

Unless there is a problem with the mother surviving the delivery, it is between the mother, father and God.

Of course you have a right to your opinion, you just don't have the authority to decide who will or will not have his civil rights, or in this case the right to privacy.

Fuck safeguards. If a woman has a right to choose on what to carry in her body full term, man or woman have the right to choose how much suffering they are willing to take and die with dignity if that is what they wish.
