He did do it as a Senator, unless you have evidence to the contrary. Lying under oath is an issue that has to be addressed. Either he explains the apparent discrepancy or deals with the consequences.

Anyone either already in the Trump administration or considering becoming part of it needs to understand the intense scrutiny and mud throwing they will undergo from the same people who reacted with "What scandal?" to Obama's appointees and their problems (think Eric Holder and Tim Geithner).

How did he mislead when he made it clear that in his role in the campaign he did not discuss the election with the Russian government? Think about it. A sitting Senator who regularly meets with foreign diplomats tries to claim he never met with Russian diplomats at all? That doesn't make sense, given that there are official records of him talking with those diplomats. I think that everyone in the room understood that, as a Senator, Sessions obviously met with foreign diplomats and that his answer dealt with the aspect of the campaign, which is what everyone was concerned about. What other Senator would give a flying rat's patoot if another Senator met with foreign diplomats in the course of his normal duties?
