A respect-filled post, on her birthday.

A superb epitaph would be: "Made a difference, for the better, in the world."
I hope that it is that one, or something close to it, that graces the gravesite of Rose Thering.

1. " Sister Rose Thering, a Roman Catholic nun and a former professor at Seton Hall University who battled anti-Semitism within her church and contributed to a historic Vatican declaration that Jews were not collectively responsible for the death of Jesus,....
Sister Rose — who wore a Star of David fused to the cross on her neck, used words like "chutzpah," and closed her letters with "shalom" — devoted most of her adult life to writing, lecturing and traveling the world in a quest to promote greater understanding in the often-strained relationships between Christians and Jews."

a. " "When I began to read, it almost made me ill." She cited a passage that asked, "Why did the Jews commit the great sin of putting God himself to death?" and another declaring, "The worst deed of the Jewish people was the murder of the Messiah."

b. " ....reversed church policy and declared of Christ's death that "what happened in his passion cannot be charged against all the Jews, without distinction, then alive, nor against the Jews of today," and, as for teaching, added: "The Jews should not be presented as rejected or accursed by God." http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/08/nyregion/08thering.html?_r=0

2. Today, August 9th, her birthday:

August 9th, 1920 Sister Rose Thering born in Plains, Wis.
She spent her life as an activist nun fostering better relations between Jews and Christians.
Her doctoral thesis, completed in 1961, is widely credited with influencing the Vatican to stop blaming the Jews for killing Jesus.

The official pronouncement came in the Vatican II document Nostra Aetate (“Our Time”), issued in (October 28)1965, which overturned hundreds of years of Catholic anti-Semitism.
The film “Sister Rose’s Passion,” which won the 2004 Oxcar for shot subject.
Sister Rose Thering died May 7, 2006 of kidney failure.

3. "Sister Rose Thering, in her doctoral research (1957-1961), did the pioneer investigation/examination of the most widely used Catholic religion teaching materials to see how we taught about other faith, ethnic, and racial groups.

It was a self-study that dealt primarily with our teachings about Jews and Judaism. A basic summary was taken to Vatican II during the deliberations before the issuance of the Vatican document Nostra Aetate: Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions in 1965.

The document caused considerable debate at Vatican II but was finally passed on the last day of deliberations.
The 15 Latin lines of text have had a deep and lasting effect on how Jews are viewed by the Catholic Church and remain strongly fixed in church teachings to this day.

Sister Rose was very active in building bridges between Jews and Christians. When asked why she did this, her immediate response was: “Because an understanding and an appreciation of Jews and Judaism and the State of Israel helps me personally. I hope and pray to become a better person, a better Christian.” About Sister Rose Thering - Seton Hall University, New Jersey

Your post is.....let's be kind and simply say 'inadequate.'

You seemingly suggest the an overall benefit when "people aren't afraid to negate tradition," and this coincides with an erroneous believe known as Liberalism.

Carefully note the following additions/corrections to your....what passes for 'thinking:'

1. Conservatives believe that custom and tradition result in individuals living in peace. Law is custom and precedent. Liberals are destroyers of custom and convention. To a conservative, change should be gradual, as the new society is often inferior to the old. We build on the ideas and experience of our ancestors. The species is wiser than the individual (Burke).

2. Liberals are impulsive, and imprudent. They believe in quick changes, and risk new abuses worse than the ‘evils’ that they would sweep away, since remedies are usually not simple. Plato said that prudence is the mark of the statesman. There should be a balance between permanence and change, while liberals see ‘progress’ as some mythical direction for society.

At the heart of change for Leftists is violent revolution.

Clearly, your implied suggestion linking the blessed Rose Thering to "change" per se, is misguided.
She did it with reason and logic and an attachment to the earliest church beliefs, as "ideas and experience of our ancestors."

More like a conservative.
