They are now into, "but he wasn't convicted", so the allegations aren't proven before a court of law. Since under DoJ guidelines the president can't be indicted, much less convicted, that's their way to express they patently don't care about the president's criminality. If he makes the trains run on time, whatever criminality there may be - on 5th Avenue, or elsewhere - is of no import to them.
