The death of Thanksgiving?

Will you shop on Thanksgiviong Day

Yes, and no. You can argue that shopping at Thanksgiving will force more people into the workforce on that day and away from their families. As I said, it's self fulfilling. Soon Thanksgiving won't mean anything except the 1st day of shopping for Christmas. An end to a fine holiday.

Againsheila, your liberal friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a socialist authoritarian age. They do not believe except they are spoon fed by the liberal media. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Sheila, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Sheila, there will still be Thanksgiving. It exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Thanksgiving. It would be as dreary as if there were no Sheilas. There would be no gorging on turkey then, no football, no drunken family squabbles to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which overeating fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Thanksgiving if a few stores are open! You might as well not believe in cranberry sauce! You might get your papa to hire men to work on Thanksgiving to earn more money for their families, and some might think it a drag, but even if they did not eat with those families until they got home later, what would that prove? Some people have always worked on Thanksgiving, even if you don't see them from your living room, but that is no sign that there will be no Thanksgiving. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see how your Auntie Judy makes her famous stuffing? Of course not, but that's no proof that it's not there. Nobody can deny what comes out in the bathroom later.

You may tear apart the drumstick to get at the dark meat, but there is always a little stuck to the tendon which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can dig into that bird and consume the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Sheila, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Thanksgiving! Thank God! it lives, and it will live forever, even if some stores stay open and some people go to work. A thousand years from now, Sheila, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, we will continue to make pigs of ourselves then fall asleep on the sofa.

Good paraphrase. I find it rather ironic that liberals who don't want anyone's values dictated to them, nor any religion whatsoever make such an effort to dictate the value that Thanksgiving supposedly holds, particularly since it IS a religious holiday. It is not particular to any one religion, but giving thanks is a religious rite.

Keeping the store open that day is completely secular and non religious.

WTF? Liberals most assuredly want to dictate values and religion. The ones they approve of.

I'm not a liberal, I'm a moderate. Nice try though. :D

Oh, and I'm right. Opening the department stores on Thanksgiving is going to lead to the end of Thanksgiving as we know it. It will just be another Christmas shopping day. This does not mean that all families will do this, but eventually, Thanksgiving just won't hold the same meaning for the majority of Americans as it does now. Again, it's a national holiday and the American thing to do would be to close anything that isn't a necessity on those days.

Anyone who find him/herself alone on Thanksgiving can ALWAYS go volunteer at the local homeless shelter.

Not on Thanksgiving. The shelters have Thanksgiving a few days early so the workers can tend to their own affairs on Thanksgiving.

What is it with people? If they are alone, they are alone more days than just Thanksgiving. What do they do on all the other days? Do the same thing.

Our local church has a Thanksgiving feast EVERY Thanksgiving day. I'm sure they aren't the only ones who do so.

Again ... with commercial enterprises taking people away from a family holiday.............. where is Bill O'Reilly's rant on the War on Thanksgiving?

He doesn't care if BUSINESSES take it away....he's a conservative and they value money above all else. Of course liberals seem to value themselves above all else so there ya go....

A day in MY life is not YOURS to spend. MYOB.

It's an internet message board ya silly bunt. Everybody gets to say their piece, much as that much chap your sorry ass.

But they do not get to make my choices. You sorry twat.

Nobody presumed to do that. Hollie merely gave her opinion and you jumped on her for not spouting the "approved" one. You and your bullshit about who's trying to control who are thus exposed as hypocrisy personified.

Well, guess what! My family and I are getting together for a week at the end of the year. Not doing either day Thanksgiving OR Christmas. I learned when I had to work those days that you can celebrate either day any time you want to. I will probably go out taking pictures on Thanksgiving.

Good one, but I think we lost that battle a long time ago....

And I think you have it absolutely right. Then they'll come back here and blame it on "liberals"

That's why I want to know where Bill O'Reilly is.

When someone gets on their high horse about what this or that 'should' be they are attempting to direct someone else's choices. Hell, you dems do it all the time. And now you can't even let others decide when to get together for Thanksgiving. You are probably too stupid to figure out how to divide the day between your family and the spouse's family.

Hint! You can eat turkey any day of the year. You can also open presents any day of the year. All you dems are is a bunch of 'should and oughts.' You couldn't manage your way out of a paper bag.

When I managed a hospital, no one got every holiday off. Whoever got Thanksgiving worked Christmas and the ones who worked Christmas got Thanksgiving. Some didn't want either day and only wanted New Year's.

If you worked Memorial Day, you got 4th of July, etc. etc. etc. Everyone can't have every holiday off that they want. I learned the best way was to give the holiday schedule to the staff, tell them what they staffing pattern was expected to be and give them a week to work it out among themselves. They always did.

If you don't want to work on Holidays, don't take a job in a place that is open on holidays. DUH.

Well that's exactly what you did jumping on a poster who simply gave her view. It's also what KG did jumping on me for protecting turkeys. See the pattern.
It's obvious to the rest of us who the wacko control freaks are, but enjoy your bubble. Hope it's nice and soft in there.

:cuckoo:

"You dems"?

Hey I understand Sheila's a "liberal" too. None so blind...

Being a conservative doesn't automatically mean you're greedy.

What is 'essential' was the brunt of Kentucky's Sunday 'blue laws' several years back. You couldn't buy toilet paper on Sunday. People like you just want to dictate what is and is not essential. I may think it is essential to buy gas or go shopping on a day that you think is 'holy.' Although I find that dems, atheists that they are, rarely find anything much to be sacred, even human life. But they will argue all day over what day to give thanks to a god they don't believe in. They are beyond stupid.

I never once said that it is. Rough day?

Couple of our posters really have their panties in a wad for anyone that doesn't fall in line, don't they?
I guess.

I love this! :D :D :D

God bless you three always!!! :) :) :)

Holly

We all get to choose our own values. I guess libs just don't understand that. They want to choose values for everyone else. Your 'shoulds and oughts' are yours. Not mine.

"People like me"? Or people who jump on others for simply voicing their view on the topic?
"People like me"? Or people who attack others for not slaughtering wild birds?
"People like me"? Or people who presume to tell others what they need to do?

Not hard to see who's dabbling in "dictation" and "choosing values" for others here, Toots. Check your mirror.

I didn't jump on you for "protecting turkeys". I jumped on you for being an idiot, and for proclaiming the cruelty of protecting turkeys in any way other than your retarded way.

I suppose you think the turkeys found you less offensive and frightening than a car horn.

Which just shows what a dolt you are.

Your church isn't a homeless shelter either.

There was a time when stores were closed on the 4th of July and on Sundays. They are not closed any more on those days and they are still the 4th of July and Sunday.

Thankgiving might well fall victim to demographic changes. The more foreign immigrants the less important it is to them. We discourage assimilation and this is the result. The more diffused the idea of family is the less important are family get togethers.

Try this, a woman with three children with three different fathers. Each child spends Thanksgiving with his or her father and the father's present girlfriend who is different than last year's girlfriend. Mom spends the day in bed drinking with her present boyfriend. How important do you think family get togethers will be to these children
when they grow up? It's not store openings destroying the family concept of the holiday , it's the end of the family changing the concept of the holiday.
