They also have to shift the poll workers to do ballot certification. And with the polls open for 12 hours, assuming two 8 hour shifts to cover, that means by midnight, (2am with overtime) their folks have to go home.

Ex: New York - Polling places are open 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM for primary and general election days
Ex: Georgia - . Polling places are open on Election Day from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
