The Post-Trump GOP

What's next for the GOP?

A couple of very interesting pieces this morning. Interestingly, much of what they cover includes what we've been talking about here. The anti-Trump types like the Lincoln Project know damn well that he has a vice-like grip on the party, and will even have to consider running separate candidates, which we haven't really talked about here. The party is so afraid of Trump, in fact, that they're not even engaging in the traditional post-mortem for fear of angering him. Holy crap.

At the same time, they did do better than expected down ticket (or was it the Democrats doing worse than expected?), so that just muddies the waters even more. So what do the next few years look like for the GOP?

Oh, for Trumpsters: Ignore all this, he won, "by a lot", they cheated, he'll stay in office, MAGA.
My thoughts:

With tRump still around and noisy (damn is he ever noisy!) They will be a party divided unless they throw their weight behind him. And if they do, as they must to have even the slightest chance at the presidency in 2024, then all the down ballot races have to kiss the orange ass for support, taking the party even farther afield from it's long lost core principals. Four more years of this and the gop is forever gone. Replaced by the tRumplings.
What you forget about the yahoo virus?

Joe won't last a second term this is not going away soon.

I don’t think Biden will run for a second term.....
Unless Trump looks like he will represent the GOP

Then, Biden will kick his ass again

I suppose if they send out paper ballots again to grade school children and illegal mexicans
Lies.

Lies.
I don't believe they are lies..

This election was statistically impossible
I think you underestimate how many people wanted to get rid of the giant failure.
74 million voted for the hated Trump 68 million voted for the beloved Messiah Obama.

82 million Americans voted to get Trump the hell out!

You would have a point if 130 million told Trump to get the hell out but you have a statistical tie...

You still lost

If Trump claims it, it's evidence enough for the flock.
What if the the "flock" stayed up on election night and watched the numbers flip while counting had allegedly stopped for the night. That wouldn't be Trump telling us what we saw. That would be our only fucking eyes.

Keep up the attitude. Keep up the "mindless drone" ridicule. It grows our numbers.

Texas is GONE!!!.

It's only a matter of time.
I remember that!

That was when Trump claimed victory only to lose by seven million votes
In their world, Trump WON by seven million votes. Or more.

:spinner:
Trump got more 8 million more votes then the beloved Messiah Obama, splain that one

Firstly, Obama wasn't anyone's "Messiah". But he was the guy who saved the world's economy, and restored both the economy and America's standing as the leading nation in the first world, after W nearly started WWIII and crashed the economy. Also, if Obama was the worst President in history, why is Trump obsessed with trying to outdo him? And failing to match anything close to Obama's economic numbers in job creation, GDP growth, or stock market growth. Obama doubled the stock market in his first term.

Also the population was much larger in 2020 than it was in 2012 - 17 million more people than 2012. Also, Trump wasn't running against Obama, and the guy Trump was running against got 7 million more votes than Trump.

Obama didn't save a dam thing. The financial crisis of 2008 was already over by the time Obama seized power. The TARP eliminated the possibility of the meltdown.
Holy shit. Here's a great example of why I no longer bother trying to discuss economics & markets with Trumpsters.
Isn't it crazy how trump failed so miserably and still has support? Trump made fun of Obama for not hitting 3% and the trumpers agreed! Trump fails to hit 3% and the trumpers say it was the greatest economy ever! They have a mental condition....
Group pathology. The world has seen this before.
Feel like it took them a couple years to realize Bush was a failure? This one could take longer...
How was bush Jr a failure he united the country like never seen before since WII
Bush did an amazing job after 9-11 uniting the country and having the world behind him.

Unfortunately he destroyed all that good will with two invasions and engaging in torture

What "torture"? Torture would have been a War Crime and/or Crime against Humanity, and neither Mr. Bush nor Mr. Cheney were ever even charged, much less extradited to The Hague to answer for such

If I would have told the average Democrat 20 years ago that a professed Socialist would nearly win their nomination, they would have laughed, just as you are today.

Except he didn't win the nomination. Really didn't even get close. ON the other hand, you guys nominated and elected a Fascist game show host.

Low and behold, here we are because the path was being laid. I can't help it that you and your ilk don't have enough foresight to see where things are headed. It is kind of frustrating actually. It's kind of like doing homework with a 6-year-old who wants to go play outside and won't focus.

Actually, more like, for most people, this system is a shit sandwich, and socialism probably sounds kind of appealling to the status quo.

Single payer health care certainly sounds appealing to anyone who has to argue with an insurance company AFTER they paid their premiums. Socialism sounds pretty reasonable to the person who just graduated from College with enough debt to buy a house and no job prospects.

How the heck can someone buy a house with no job, meth head joe?

I see a splinter as those smart enough will run from the Trump legacy and there will be those who will repeat that legacy of hate. The policy of hate got him to the big game. Yet it can also said that it is the reason he lost in the 2nd quarter. It will be hard for those to ignore his base and will seek to kiss the don's hand in gaining access to this base. I can only say good luck with that. Make the deal with the devil comes to mind. I see Cruz and other like minds will embrace Trump. Yet it is a double edge sword.

Republicans are being short sighted
Pandering to the MAGA crowd may help them win with the older, white Christians who fear their loss of power.
But younger Americans and minorities are repulsed by the actions of the far right. They are lost forever
Might be true, but the Dems are making a big mistake if they assume too much. They're certainly capable of going too far, as well.

This is why I don't like seeing the GOP turn into a fuckin' psycho ward like this. We need (at least) two strong parties.

When I checked the website of the Dem's national convention in 2016, it took me 15 minutes of clicking around until I saw the first picture of a white male who wasn't obviously depicted as gay.

It's all nice and fine when Democrats care for the issues of non-whites and other minorities ... but if they give a damn about white workers, they shouldn't be surprised when 70% of them then vote for someone like Trump.
This is a very large part of why Trump won in 2016 and why the Dems underperformed in November. The Regressive Left wing of the party -- the illiberal, authoritarian end that pushes Political Correctness, Identity Politics and Cancel Culture -- has damaged the party considerably.

And, just as the Trumpsters are refusing to look clearly and honestly in the mirror, so is the Regressive Left. As I always say, the two ends of our political spectrum can be comically similar in their behaviors.

We are NOT using mob violence to terrorize our enemies, and arresting people that defend themselves.

So, the similarities, are not very impressive.
Yeah you just shoot up wal marts and mail bombs to people.

He does not seem to care, and in fact has shown that he revels in the "fuck you" he is watching. I would conclude that he does not believe that we are dead fucking serious.

Texas is GONE. Leaving. It may not be this year, or next year, but the sentiment is real and serious. We are getting the fuck out one way or another. If it's peaceful, great. But, I suspect that the powerbrokers will not give up on the world's 10th largest economy that easily. I am at peace with that eventuality and will die for it.

I don't know how this will shake out

I do know that if they want to marginalize and oppress the single largest ethnic group in the country, that there will be civil unrest that will START at the level of the 60s and grow from there.

I do.
Biden is President.
You won't do shit.

Obama banned water boarding his first day in office

Their best bet for the demographic reality that will be 2024 is to switch to a more libertarian stance on almost every issue.

There just aren't going to be enough boomers alive in 2024 to run anyone named Trump and have any sort of chance.
