The Return of the Poll Tax in Florida
By The Editorial Board

A Republican proposal would condition the right to vote on the payment of all outstanding court fines and fees.

Florida voters approved a ballot measure in November to restore voting rights to up to 1.4 million people with felony convictions who have served their sentences and thus paid their debt to society. The passage of Amendment 4, which went into effect in January, righted 150 years of injustice.

But Republican lawmakers in the state immediately went to work to undermine that progress. On March 19, a state House panel on criminal justice approved, along party lines, a measure that would erect new roadblocks for the Floridians who just regained the right to vote.

The new proposal would require those who want their voting rights restored to first pay all outstanding court fees and costs arising from their prior convictions — a move that one Democratic lawmaker denounced as an unconstitutional poll tax.

Under Amendment 4, “any disqualification from voting arising from a felony conviction shall terminate and voting rights shall be restored upon completion of all terms of sentence including parole or probation.”

But Florida Republicans want “completion” of a sentence to include “a financial obligation arising from a felony conviction” — such as the court costs and fines that Florida is notorious for imposing on top of criminal sentences. This would, in effect, suppress the votes of people who are too poor to pay.

This is yet another example of Republicans’ contempt for the will of the people.

How is it "contempt for the will of the people" for the popularly elected legislature to pass a law which helps collect the money owed the government?

It's pretty simple actually. The people did not vote for what republicans are adding to this.

The people entrusted the decision on this to their elected representatives.

Just because there isn't a referendum, doesn't mean it isn't the will of the people.

BTW, if the Civil Rights Act had been put up as a referendum, it would have failed in Democrat areas.

How is requiring people to be upstanding citizens construed to mean a "poll tax"?

IMHO, they should have sheriff's deputies on duty at polling places, and if someone has a warrant for child support, they can be picked up when they approach the voting precinct.

Let's stop asking stupid questions. This has never been a requirement to vote.

My point is that it SHOULD be a requirement to vote. If someone refuses to support their own children, should they really be entrusted with our nation's future? I think not.

Your point is garbage.

So you are fine with being ruled by people who don't support their children.

Do you support Trumps border policy?

Elect me President and I guarantee that I will increase the height, width and depth of Trump's Wall by a scale factor of 10.

it is more like Republicans protecting the will of the people from criminals

it is more like Republicans making it so they can vote in more criminals.
Totally stupid

Criminals are going to vote for Democrats because they are also criminals. That's why they want felons to vote.

So you are a democrat and so is Trump.

If i was a Democrat I would be advocating for criminals and foreign nationals to vote.

You really need to recant your comments because republicans are using them to win elections.

OP is a moron, this thread is shit.

If he came to FL, he'd be in FSP within 90 days.

Ever wonder what happened to criminals in New Orleans?

They came here after Katrina, they're still in FSP.

We don't play that here.

This applies to me too, you break the law, you're fucking going. Lake Butler bound.

Florida State Prison.

Raiford. I have a friend that went to Raiford when he was 16, he got out in 2 1/2 years. Then he got his ass blown off messin' with a redneck. Half his ass, anyway. With a 30-.06 that redneck shot his ass.
Let it be know FL does not tolerate lawbreakers. We got 1/2 of New Orleans hoodlums up in there right now, and they are not welcome, we're from here and they're not, get it? True story. If you can't do no hard labor, you're a sorry piece of shit.
I've been on the chain gang, motherfucker.
I was the leader, too.
I know how to work. Most people don't come back from Raiford that quick either, that was an anomaly.

I have ALWAYS had a problem with the phrase, "Paid his debt to society'' because -- It's bullshit.

How do you UN-BREAK A LAW? How do you UN-MURDER someone? How do you UN-ROB a Bank??

All an ex-con has done is served his time. That POS has NOT repaid anything. He has actually COST us money to incarcerate.his sorry ass.

The ONLY reason that this is an issue is that dimocrap FILTH think they can pick up a few million votes from scum of the Earth criminals. Since virtually all criminals are dimocrap scum, they would be correct.

That's all that's going on here, people. dimocrap FILTH are trying to steal some votes.

People who have lost their PRIVILEGE to vote (it is NOT a right, it is a privilege) need to be judged on a one-at-a-time basis. And the bar needs to be set high.

We are NOT a democracy. No democracy has ever worked or survived. We are a REPUBLIC.

Republics have a rules. And one of them is -- Voting is a privilege, NOT a right.

Criminals should be forced to work to offset the cost of housing and feeding their sorry asses. The number of incarcerated would drop dramatically. The reason they're criminals is they don't want to work.

Most criminals are Democrats and it's no mystery to anyone with a brain why Democrats are hell bent on giving criminals voting rights. Same thing with getting illegal aliens here to drop anchor babies as fast as they can. VOTES

Brainwashed, but in this case ^^^ he over paid, all he needed was a lite rinse.

If a Democrat accuses you of something, like being brainwashed or working for russia or being racist, it's a very safe bet they are eyeballs deep in that activity. All in rules for radicals.

Denial ^^^ based on ignorance and biases. Claims such as, "Most criminals are Democrats" is absurd on its face and cannot be proved. It's hate mongering and fear mongering and foolish, all together. typical of the brainwashed supporters of trump.

Edgetho, I have been called a moron, and it is true...for responding to your arrogance of perfection. However, I cannot resist. In your world, if you get caught running a red light, instead of a fine and and reprimand before returning to your normal life, your license would be taken and NEVER returned. After all, a law has been broken. Accidental fender-benders should also be denied driving too, once the offending culprit is determined. Then when you apply for a job, or a loan, or the right to vote, you should be shown the door.
