First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for those who didn't go along with everything gay, and if we don't speak out, we will be forever silenced.

Tony Dungy's comments on openly gay NFL player Michael Sam draw ire

Esteemed NFL coach turned NBC analyst Tony Dungy is taking fire for saying he would not have drafted Michael Sam, the league’s first openly gay player.

In an interview with*the Tampa Tribunepublished Sunday, the former coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Super Bowl champion*Indianapolis Colts said he would have passed on Sam.* "Not because I don't believe Michael Sam should have a chance to play, but I wouldn't want to deal with all of it,” Dungy said.

Dungy went on to say, “It’s not going to be totally smooth … things will happen.’’

Dungy did not say what, exactly, were the things he anticipated happening.

Sam, the former Missouri defensive player, was drafted in the seventh round by the St. Louis Rams and has the sixth bestselling jersey in the league, according to the NFL.

Dungy's*comments drew immediate ire*online, with people calling him ignorant and offensive.

Some of those comments included:*

“... to not draft an openly gay player because someone...might...not handle it...is some kind of Jim Crow-era awful,” one Twitter commenter said.

"So it turns out Tony Dungy is a coward? Didn't see that coming,” another commenter said.

Still, there were those who supported Dungy.

"So glad Tony Dungy*said what he said. Sorry he has to get bashed for it though. You can't obtain tolerance by forcing it on society,” one commenter said.

Football stands above all other sports as the arena of masculinity. It's about achieving domination through superior mental and physical abilities. It is certainly the king of sports because the game exists beyond normal human limitations. It's also pageantry and hero worship. That is...

Tony Dungy's comments on openly gay NFL player Michael Sam draw ire - LA Times

Dungy says his quotes were taken out of context, also said this:

I was asked whether I would have drafted Michael Sam and I answered that I would not have drafted him. I gave my honest answer, which is that I felt drafting him would bring much distraction to the team. At the time of my interview, the Oprah Winfrey reality show that was going to chronicle Michael's first season had been announced.

Dungy also made it clear that Sam's status as the NFL's first openly gay player is not what would have deterred him from selecting him:

I was not asked whether or not Michael Sam deserves an opportunity to play in the NFL. He absolutely does. I was not asked whether his sexual orientation should play a part in the evaluation process. It should not. I was not asked whether I would have a problem having Michael Sam on my team. I would not.

More specifically, Dungy said that the media coverage surrounding Sam is what primarily makes him a distraction:

I do not believe Michael's sexual orientation will be a distraction to his teammates or his organization. I do, however, believe that the media attention that comes with it will be a distraction. Unfortunately we are all seeing this play out now, and I feel badly that my remarks played a role in the distraction.

Following the release of Dungy's comments on Monday, there were many differing opinions within the media.

Takes a big man to admit he erred.

He's referring to the media circus and Oprah documentary filming that would be following Sam to whatever team that drafted him, a series of distractions he would not want taking place during training camp of a team he coached. Too many distractions when coaches need to be coaching and evaluating which 53 out of maybe 80-something players make their team better.

It's got nothing to do with why the media and Opy are attracted to the guy. And I'd bet dollars to donuts a lot of coaches share his position about it.

Who is they?

He said stupid things. Those kinds of things were once said about black athletes.

said he would have passed on Sam.* "Not because I don't believe Michael Sam should have a chance to play, but I wouldn't want to deal with all of it,” Dungy said.

What is stupid about what he said, it is nothing but the truth.

And he says intelligent things also:

I feel badly that my remarks played a role in the distraction.

Most of the condemnation of Dungy's comments that I have seen have to do with the fact that the media circus concerning his hiring of Michael Vick didn't seem to bother him at all. And, unlike Sam, Vick actually did something wrong.

The blatant hypocrisy is what has many people upset.

Good point, but I glad he clarified.

Ummmm......Dungy did not hire Vick. You must be dazed by a Howard Stern ass blast.....

I doubt that Dungy was referring to media distraction. That became a convenient backtrack when he found himself pressed by the homofascist agenda. Considering the disproportionate number of black players in the NFL, many of whom inevitably were raised in black churches -- which are staunchly anti-homo -- Dungy was more than likely referring to the distraction an openly-homo player would generate among the team.

St. Louis Rams now have a built in excuse when they do not make the playoffs this year. Dungy just provided them with it....."We were distracted......we were distracted!!!".
The Rams thank Tony.

He actively campaigned for NFL teams to hire Vick. My mistake. No idea what the Howard stern bit was about though.

If I'm in the locker room, I don't want some faggot showering with me. Ask a team of female softball players if they want to shower with a normal man.

If you are playing professional football, the chances are pretty good that you have already showered with a gay man.

I would like to shower with a team of female softball players. We'll be playing hardball though.
