The real problem... we asked cops to control crime without addressing the underlying causes- Racism, Poverty, Addiction, Mental Illness and the fact that it is way to easy for any asshole to get a gun.

So instead of having a situation like Japan, where the cops almost never pull their guns because they know that whoever they are arresting for drinking too much sake isn't likely to have a gun himself, we have a situation where cops panic and shoot people.

It's not just that gun control works in Japan. It works fine everywhere it's been tried.
Except for the US, where we don't try because the Gun Lobby writes the gun laws, and they want the bad guys to have them so everyone else will be scared and want them, too.
