Profile of Missouri Gun Owner Shows Why Gun Control Orgs Are Doomed to Fail - The Truth About Guns

“I may not get them, but with me having a gun — at least I have a chance.” That’s Sherry Sherrow’s philosophy about gun ownership boiled down to its essence. And it jibes well with that of tens of millions of other Americans.

The Kansas City Star’s profile of the Lee’s Summit, Missouri former teacher is an accurate portrait of Americans’ attitudes about firearm freedom and illustrates why the left’s attempts to wring the gun culture out of this country is forever doomed to failure.

She’s a widow and only came to appreciate guns when she inherited her father’s old .38.

She liked that old gun. Liked how it made her feel. So she bought another one. One that fit her hand better — a .380 Sig Sauer semi-automatic pistol. She’s since added a few more — handguns, long guns, assault rifle — making this spry senior citizen, who laughs easily and has 16 grandchildren, pretty much loaded for bear.

Somebody pounding on the front door in the middle of the night spurred this push for security. It scared her. Turned out to be pranksters, but she got to thinking — what if it was something else? What if they’d banged all the way inside?

“It made me wary,” she said.

She’s a regular shooter now and an NRA life member. And she’s not a doctrinaire gun rights advocate.

The problem is, most crimes aren't committed by people "in the criminal culture".

Most crimes are committed by regular people. That woman (and everyone else in this country) is more likely to be killed by one of her immediate family members and social circle than by a random home invasion.

Good for her. But the real reason gun control will always fail in this country is that there are over 400 million guns here, and it is easier for a criminal or wannabe criminal to get a gun here than anywhere else in the world.

Except in every country with strict gun control.....you mean except for those countries...

No, less criminals use guns there because the difficulty of getting one is exponentially higher.

No...you are completely wrong....the primary determinate for domestic murder is having someone who is a criminal in the home, or someone addicted to drugs or alcohol or a history of violence and encounters of police....

You guys keep pushing the myth of the normal person losing their crap over an argument and committing murder....that isn't even remotely true.

As Gun-Related Deaths Increase, Prior Criminal Records Is Common Link Among Shooters, Victims | Wisconsin Public Radio

Almost two-thirds of the fatal shootings in the state have taken place in Milwaukee. The others are scattered around 15 different cities and towns. In almost all cases, however, both victims and alleged perpetrators have criminal records.

Mallory O'Brien, of the Milwaukee Homicide Review Commission, tracks those numbers for the city of Milwaukee.

"(About) 94 percent of our victims have an arrest history and 93 percent of our suspects have an arrest history," O'Brien said.

O'Brien said the same percentage is true for non-fatal shooting incidents. There's been an increase in those numbers as well. By the end of June of last year, there were 204 cases and the count at the six-month mark this year, there have been 248 incidents -- a 21-percent increase. She said there' also been an increase in the number of shooting incidents with multiple victims.

JURIST - The Criminology of Firearms

Christoffel, et al., are utterly wrong. The whole corpus of criminological research dating back to the 1890'sshows murderers "almost uniformly have a long history of involvement in criminal behavior," and that "[v]irtually all" murderers and other gun criminals have prior felony records — generally long ones.

While only 15 percent of Americans have criminal records, roughly 90 percent of adult murderers have prior adult records — exclusive of their often extensive juvenile records — with crime careers of six or more adult years including four major felonies. Gerald D. Robin, writing for the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, notes that, unlike ordinary gun owners, "the average murderer turns out to be no less hardened a criminal than the average robber or burglar."

Blocks, corners, and buildings representing just five or six percent of an entire city will drive half of its serious crime.”

The same is true about people. “We now know that homicide and gun violence are overwhelmingly concentrated among serious offenders operating in groups: gangs, drug crews, and the like representing under half of one percent of a city's population who commit half to three-quarters of all murders.”

Read it once more: “ … under half of one percent … commit half to three-quarters of all murders.”

That is not true. 80% of the violent crime committed in this country is done by around 8% of the criminal population.

Wrong...again....countries with absolute gun control only keep guns out of the hands of their law abiding people.....criminals get guns, the same way they get drugs....and they need guns to enforce their drug territory.....you don't know what you are talking about...

Even anti gun paradise, Great Britain.....where they banned and confiscated guns, can't keep guns out of the hands of their criminals....their gun crime rates keep going up.....

Citizens can get guns there. It's harder though. Same as it is for criminals. Thus the admirable gun crime numbers.

Only rich citizens can get them. Criminals as well have no problem getting them either. That's why the gun crime rate is skyrocketing. The UK is importing violent third world people into the country, just like we have had to live with for decades. It ain't the gun, it's the person using it. Third world folks are far more apt to resort to violence than First world folks. It's not about race, it's a cultural thing.

Admirable gun crime numbers....? You still refuse to see the truth...gun crime is up, again, in Britain, 27% across the country and up 42% in London alone just last year.....their gun murder rate, never went down below where it was at before the ban...and their violent crime rates are through the roof.....

U.K. Begins Another Gun Surrender Initiative Amid Increase in Gun Crime

The United Kingdom's National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS) is conducting a new gun surrender program from Nov. 13 to Nov. 26 after gun crime in England and Wales increased by more than a quarter in the past year.

The Office for National Statistics found a 27 percent increase in crimes involving firearms during its most recent review of crime data. Despite a near ban on the civilian ownership of handguns the review found crimes committed with handguns increased by 25 percent and accounted for the majority of gun crimes. The agency said the increases in 2016 were part of a multiyear trend.

Gun crime in London increases by 42% - BBC News

Gun crime offences in London surged by 42% in the last year, according to official statistics.

Top trauma surgeon reveals shocking extent of London’s gun crime

A leading trauma surgeon has told how the number of patients treated for gunshot injuries at a major London hospital has doubled in the last five years.

----

He said the hospital’s major trauma centre had seen a bigger rise in gunshot injuries compared to knife wounds and that the average age of victims was getting younger.

-----

Last year, gun crime offences in London increased for a third year running and by 42 per cent, from 1,793 offences in 2015/16 to 2,544 offences in 2016/17. Police have seized 635 guns off the streets so far this year.

Dr Griffiths, who also teaches medical students, said: “Our numbers of victims of gun injury have doubled [since 2012]. Gunshot injuries represent about 2.5 per cent of our penetrating trauma.

-----

Dr Griffiths said the average age of gun crime victims needing treatment at the hospital had decreased from 25 to the mid to late teens since 2012.

He added that medics at the Barts Health hospital’s major trauma centre in Whitechapel had seen a bigger rise in patients with gun injuries rather than knife wounds and that most were caused by pistols or shotguns.

Met Police commander Jim Stokley, who was also invited to speak at the meeting, said that handguns and shotguns were the weapons of choice and that 46 per cent of London’s gun crime discharges were gang-related.

He said: “We believe that a lot of it is associated with the drugs trade, and by that I mean people dealing drugs at street level and disagreements between different gangs.”

Violent crime on the rise in every corner of the country, figures suggest

But analysis of the figures force by force, showed the full extent of the problem, with only one constabulary, Nottinghamshire, recording a reduction in violent offences.

The vast majority of police forces actually witnessed double digit rises in violent crime, with Northumbria posting a 95 per cent increase year on year.

Of the other forces, Durham Police recorded a 73 per cent rise; West Yorkshire was up 48 per cent; Avon and Somerset 45 per cent; Dorset 39 per cent and Warwickshire 37 per cent.

Elsewhere Humberside, South Yorkshire, Staffordshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent, Wiltshire and Dyfed Powys all saw violence rise by more than a quarter year on year.

In the UK if you want to commit a gun crime, you have to either go through the effort and expense of getting one legally, or risk your life and your pockets by going into the criminal underground and going through effort, expense and danger there.

In the U.S., you can spend 15 minutes in a gun store, or at a gun show, or go to the neighborhood gun guy, or break into a house (odds are there might be a gun there), or trip over one while you're walking home.

The UK has a tiny fraction of our gun crime rate. They noticed gun crime going up, so, logically, they try to get guns off the street. Something not possible in the U.S.

Yeah...the truth, the facts and the reality in Britain show you don't know what you are talking about...they banned and confiscated guns...now their gun crime rate is going way up.

We increased gun ownership, and now over 16.3 million Americans have gun carry permits....and our gun crime rate dropped 75%........

They are doing it wrong. We are doing it right.

Good for her. But the real reason gun control will always fail in this country is that there are over 400 million guns here, and it is easier for a criminal or wannabe criminal to get a gun here than anywhere else in the world.
You have obviously never heard of the gun markets in some of the 3rd world were fully automatic AK-47's are dirt cheap. Try and buy one hear in the US.

You have to jump a couple hoops, and you can get a brand new in perfect condition. Not a 3rd world piece of shit. Though as 2aguy would point out to you, a criminal can do much more damage with a pistol or a semi-automatic that they can obtain legally with little effort.
