President Donald Trump on Thursday overturned longstanding US policy regarding the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, announcing "it is time" for the US to "fully recognize Israel's Sovereignty" over the region.

"After 52 years it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel's Sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability," Trump tweeted.

It certainly is time.

A couple of years ago I got to spend time in the Holy Land....Israel and Jordan, and had a tour of the Golan Heights.
There is no way Israel can give this area up.

Prior to the 1967 war, Syria would lob shells into the valley below, in which Israel had settlements, kibbutzim....they need to keep this area as a vital defense.

During the Six Day War of '67, Syria outsmarted itself....Hoping to have the world, and the Soviets, aid them, they falsely claimed that Israel taken the town of Quneitra.
Their own troops believed it...and, afraid of being surrounded, they turned and fled from the Golan.

Actually, there was no peace treaty with Syria although several PM's, including Netanyahu, have offered to return all or most of the Golan to Syria in return for a peace treaty, but Syria has consistently refused to make peace with Israel.
