I can think of many good reasons to maintain denial whether or not aliens are actually involved. Can't think of a single one though for disclosure either way. The mystery is more attractive I think. If aliens aren't involved, that'd be kinda disappointing. If they are, that'd be bad since they obviously want their presence kept secret.

The Government has already disclosed everything on UFOs

There ain't none

Imagine if they did reveal some UFOs have been actual aliens. Logical next question becomes "When do we get to meet them?" If the answer's "Never." regardless of the reason, it'd cause far greater damage than alledged cover-ups ever did.

Why would the Government care if you saw aliens or not?

It would mean more money for NASA is they are like ET and more money for the Dept of Defense if they are like Predator

May not be up to the government. If aliens are working with us, obviously since not buzzing cities letting their presence be documented they want their presence kept secret for some reason. Might be getting advanced technology on the condition we deny their presence. Or could be worse than that, that they doing research we'd not be too happy about. If anyone let's that get out that people believed it, the aliens would retaliate somehow. Or perhaps there's more than one alien species with interests in our planet and revealing one's working with us, another'd get upset about it. Or as the X-Files series suggested maybe it's a colonization thing and keeping it under wraps is postponing. Reveal it and there's no longer a reason to be subtle and alien ships are hovering over our cities suddenly.

If there are no aliens visiting us, all the mythology to the contrary means governments are responsible. That could destabilize things just as easily as aliens were responsible. It'd mean we have some exoticly advanced technology that's change balances of power and make the nuclear arms race look silly in comparison.

No reason to reveal it though beyond selfish curiousity. Could we as a race handle aliens? No. As rightly stated in "Men In Black"

"Why the big secret, we're smart we could handle it."

"A person is smart. But people are dumb panicky animals and you know it."

Absolutely right. Look at how nuts people get over religious issues. People commit murder, mass sucide for a lot less than aliens. And whereas individuals and small groups handle stress well, large groups do not.

Or else the alien could be hiding in a childs bedroom right under our eyes and only come out for Halloween and an occaisional phonecall

There was a great program on UFO's, and it talked about how Clinton, Carter and Reagan wanted the info made public (cliff notes)

Carter and Reagan actually saw UFO's (yes its documented). Supposedly Bush Sr knows a lot about them and it's strictly on a "need to know" basis.

At any rate after watching this program I personally came away with the conclusion that once a Prez is briefed on them it's in the best interest of national security that they don't divulge the info they have.

I don't think people in general would feel comfortable with the fact we have absolutely no way to defend ourselves against them if they became hostile. Not to mention they can fly in and out of our airspace at will, control our nukes (and other countries) and essentially do whatever they'd like at will. We have zero control over them

People would freak out. Also the ramifications it would have on societies as a whole would be devastating. People laugh at it and talk about tin foil hats etc etc. Their entire reality and world view would be flipped upside down. Talk about mass hysteria x 1000

It wouldn't be pretty

It's not just UFO's whatever they might be, it's anything to do with "anomalies" regarding prior advanced civilization on Earth and even on the Moon; it would make you question your Faith in the Government.

They are also hiding information from us about genies in bottles, witches, leprechauns, poltergeists, werewolves, and vampires, not to mention a global conspiracy of a small group of people to take over the world.

Baalbek, Lebanon

The top stones, the ones with no weathering were placed there by Romans when Augustus ran the empire.

The massive blocks the rest upon were there when the Roman got there and you can see they are very weathered. The locals say the stones were there from the time of Adam and Eve.

The Roman didn't place them there.

"These three stone blocks are the largest building blocks ever used by any human beings anywhere in the world. Each one is 70 feet long, 14 feet high, 10 feet thick, and weigh around 800 tons. This is larger than the incredible columns created for the Temple of Jupiter, which are also 70 feet tall but measure a mere 7 feet -- and they weren't constructed from single pieces of stone. In each of the above two images, you can see people standing by the trilithon to provide reference for how large they are: in the top image a person is standing to the far left and in the bottom image a person is sitting on a stone about in the middle.

Beneath the trilithon are another six huge building blocks, each 35 feet long and thus also larger than most building blocks used by humans anywhere else. "

If these beings from outer space were so advanced, why didn't they make a compoud from various materials, as we do today, instead of using blocks of stone as primitives would do? Were these beings, who were able too travel from galaxy to galaxy, more primitive than we are today and couldn't create their own compounds to make building blocks? Critical thinking skills, boys. Critical thinking skills. If there were beings on Earth with the technical ability to travel from other galaxies, they would have the skills to make their own building blocks from available materials rather than carve out and haul huge blocks of stone from other places. Duh, and double duh.
