Guys, the destroyer is fighting flooding and 10 crew are missing...

The he US Naval Institute reports that the crew is fighting flooding in several spaces on the ship. The ship has limited propulsion and electrical power but good communications as it heads back into port. The big deck amphibious warship USS America (LHA-6) is steaming toward McCain to offer support to the stricken destroyer.

Search and rescue efforts are underway in coordination with local authorities. In addition to tug boats out of Singapore, the Republic of Singapore Navy ship RSS Gallant (97), RSN helicopters and Police Coast Guard vessel Basking Shark (55) are currently in the area to render assistance.

MV-22s and SH-60s from USS America are also responding and the USS McCain is currently sailing under its own power and heading to port.

This crash came days after the top three leaders aboard the USS Fitzgerald were relieved of command.

I hope they are found safely and I also hope that the official reason for these incidents lately is the one stated publicly. If China is engaging American military and to avoid a larger conflict it is being classified, then there are big problems. Obviously this is most likely not the case, but with China an ever growing threat, it is not out of the realm of possibility.

Anyone who has seen the movie 13 Days which dealt with the inner Whitehouse decision making during the Cuban missile crisis has seen this type of situation. The incident in which the U.S spy plane was shot on by the Russians and/or Cuba defense as photos of the nuclear build up were taking place comes to mind. The pilot was ordered to accept that he had "flown into a flock of birds" to avoid a less avoidable conflict with the Russians when clearly there were land to air bullet holes in his plane.

Actually the Fitz incident was a Philippine flagged ship. The one today is a Liberian flagged ship.
