It's an on-going problem that isn't being fixed. And it's just as bad for women in uniform as civilian women.

"The Pentagon has released new data about the reported number of sexual assaults in the military. Between July 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013 there were 3,553 reports of sexual assault, a 43% increase from the year before. During the same period, there were 219 casualties in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Last year, soldiers were 15 times more likely to be raped by a comrade then killed by an enemy.
According to the Department of Labor, between 20-48% of female veterans were sexually assaulted in the military. More women leave the military with post-traumatic stress disorder from rape than combat."

3,553 'reported' incidents. But very few sexual assaults ever get reported so the actual number may be dozens of times higher.

How is this a current event?

The article in that first link is just one month shy of being a year old.

Yes, it's old news, so what?
Still, it's an important issue. I don't think that situation has changes significantly.
And the fact that it's even more dangerous to be in the military than actually be at a battle field is a disturbing problem.
