US to Extract Minerals From Afghanistan to ‘Defray Cost of US Assistance’

why is this a bad thing?

Well since you raise the question, maybe you can first explain how the US can justify it. They did not ask us to occupy their country, so the fact that we're there in the first place has always been questionable.
So your real answer is, it's bad because Trump is doing it. But if Obama did it, that would be the best thing we ever done.

U.S. Companies are planning on taking a larger role in extracting Afghanistan’s enormous reserves of valuable rare earth minerals, Reuters reported after U.S. President Donald Trump met with his Afghan counterpart Ashraf Ghani on Thursday.

According to a White House statement, the presidents agreed that the development of Afghan minerals by U.S. companies would “develop materials critical to national security,” as well as “defray some of the costs of United States assistance as Afghans become more self-reliant.”

Any guesses on how long before a Hawaiian judge rules that Trump can't do this?

American interventionalism is where this is going Angelo

methinks you'll find the majority of our ventures come with a price

the world police need to eat too

If there's gonna be an empire, better us than China.

Gotta agree, but here's where the metric that applies would be debatable.....for ex , it's my suspicion that 600 military bases around this rock isn't all about the stars/bars, mom's apple pie , etc

capisce....?

Only 600 ? I keep hearing it's between 900 and 1000 now, but not sure if that includes
the bases here at home.

Seems a bit convoluted and like something the British would do.

BUT, if the title just said, "companies are moving into Afghanistan now that we've opened up the market" I might shrug and say at least we're using the Marshall Plan to export American Dollars there to rebuild Afghanistan one whatever we buy from them at a time.

So its all in the wording or degree of exploitation.

If you look at the history of Iran in 1953, this is nearly the same thing.

Then if you look at what happened in 1979 you will look at the cost to America of what we did in Iran to cause it.

Then if you look at Iran from that year on, you will see the results of it.

All trump is doing is creating the same type of problem.

All so that some American companies and trump can get richer. Don't fool yourself, there's something in this for trump. There always is.

You can just look at a map and see the prime reason for being in Iraq and Afghanistan. Opium, gas lines and minerals could have been traded peacefully all this time....always a lot of "what ifs" involved.

Apart from being the Commander In Chief of our armed forces there,
Donald Trump couldn't care less about Afghanistan. ( except for beating China to the mineral rights maybe ? ) They've known about this for a long time.

In 2010, the USGS data attracted the attention of the U.S. Department of Defense's Task Force for Business and Stability Operations (TFBSO), which is entrusted with rebuilding Afghanistan. The task force valued Afghanistan's mineral resources at $908 billion, while the Afghan government's estimate is $3 trillion.

"Afghanistan has some of the world’s largest un-extracted reserves of rare earth minerals valuable in electronic production, such as lithium, as well as gold and various gemstones.

"The U.S. Geological Survey estimates the total value at at least US$1 trillion."

A popular explanation on the left for long-term US troop presence in Afghanistan claims it is to exclude the Chinese from those mineral riches.

Remember in 2017 when the non-nuclear MOAB was dropped there ....
for....some reason. Perhaps to level the caves and make the ground more stable for the coming
mining caravans ?

It's possible those caves were partially created by the CIA during Carter/Reagan days?

Where the MOAB hit in Afghanistan - CNN

"The mountains where ISIS made their base were the same ones used by bin Laden as a bolt hole and the same used by the CIA-backed mujahideen when they were fighting the Soviets in the 1980s.

"It was from camps in these same hills that the mujahideen fought their way into the provincial capital city of Jalalabad, forcing the Soviets out of the airbase that is now a key strategic US military hub."

During the Vietnam War, pilots returning to their carriers with unused ordinance were ordered to drop the bombs into coastal waters.

It would be weird for the Taliban to have asked us to come over and stop them from enslaving people. The question is, why would you want permission from monsters to stop them from being monsters?

Just like Japan, eh?
Change the channel and get some perspective.
Can you explain what you mean by that ?
You’re being obtuse.
By speculating on the reason we dropped the world's biggest bomb on the world's poorest country ? Whatever you say Huckleberry.

No, we dropped that bomb on Japan. Japan attacked us so we bombed them and changed their culture. Afghanistan essentially did the same so they’ve needed the same treatment.
